Wood tops test

WAU Kiwi Ryan Wood has carried on his good form by ending the Supercars mid-season test at Queensland Raceway on top.
Wood was the only driver to record a 1m08s lap time across the entire eight-hour day that included co-drivers with the enduros on the horizon.
The Kiwi’s 1:08.8415 was set at the back end of the day and was a massive three tenths clear of the rest in the afternoon session.
Next best was Craig Lowndes, who showed good speed in his return to the #888 Supercheap Auto wildcard, being 0.3183s off the pace.
Andre Heimgartner edged out Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup after they topped the morning session, which stood as the second fastest time of the day.
Rounding out the top five were Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood.
But one of the biggest stories was the speed of the wildcards.
In addition to Lowndes and Zach Bates, Cameron Crick and Aaron Seton secured sixth, while Tickford Super2 racers Rylan Gray and Lochie Dalton ensured all three wildcards were in the top 11.
After seven entries raised a century of laps in the morning, only two achieved it in the afternoon, being Feeney and Whincup, plus Aaron Cameron and Zak Best.
Bates continued his form by going fastest in the first 90 minutes of the session by a slim 0.0098s over Heimgartner.
Then things stepped up at the death when Wood put the foot down.
Critically, Erebus youngster Jarrod Hughes gritted his teeth and got some laps in the #9 he will share with Jack Le Brocq.
With the test out of the way, teams are fully in enduro mode ahead of the AirTouch 500 at The Bend on September 12-14.

'description' => 'The Supercars Championship, currently known as the Repco Supercars Championship, is the premier motorsport category in Australasia and one of Australia\'s biggest sports. It originated from the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC), which held its first race in 1960 at Gnoo-Blas in Orange, New South Wales. The ATCC evolved over the years, and in 1997, it was rebranded as the V8 Supercars Championship, eventually becoming the Supercars Championship we know today.
Some of the leading drivers in the history of the Supercars Championship include Peter Brock, who is often referred to as the "King of the Mountain" for his nine victories at the Bathurst 1000, a race that is considered one of the biggest in the series. Other notable drivers include Dick Johnson, Marcos Ambrose, Craig Lowndes, Shane van Gisbergen, Jamie Whincup, who holds the record for the most championship titles, and Mark Skaife, who has also been a dominant force in the series.
The Bathurst 1000, held at Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, is arguably the most famous race in the Supercars calendar. Other significant races include the Sandown 500 and the Adelaide 500, which are known for their challenging circuits and thrilling competitions.
