Wildcards star in Supercars return to QR

Feeney celebrates Tasmania pole

By Thomas Miles

Broc Feeney topped the first Supercars session at Queensland Raceway in 2203 days, but it was the wildcards who stole the show.

Sprint Cup leader Feeney carried on his strong form by firing a 1:09.2078 in a late dash towards the end of opening practice.

Having fired the fastest laps in both of his final two tours, Feeney enjoyed a commanding two-tenth advantage over the rest of the field on his local test track.

Best of the rest 0.1965s back were Anton De Pasquale and Cameron Hill as the entire top six were all Camaros, with Ryan Wood the leading Ford.

But it was the wildcards that stood out with Cameron Crick in his return since the Sydney opener, and Zach Bates in his first Supercars session, fourth and fifth respectively.

The pair did utilise an extra set of soft tyres to do so as many did long runs on old tyres to come to grips with the unfamiliar Queensland Raceway.

Overcast skies greeted the field for the first Supercars session since its last round in 2019.

However, less than two minutes were possible before the red flags were waved almost instantly due to debris.

Amazingly, it was a stray bottle appearing on the racing line on approach to Turn 2.

Despite being the team’s first lap of Queensland Raceway in six years Anton De Pasquale topped the times after the first flying laps with a 1:09.6998, just 0.0019s clear of Brodie Kostecki.

It did not take long for Feeney to fire with a 1:09.4166 out of the gates.

But the Bates wildcard was fast as he and Hill came within 0.0475s.

Wood also came within a tenth being the first to bolt out of the gates in the second run.

At the halfway mark De Pasquale reclaimed the lead with a 1:09.4043, which stood until the final three minutes when Feeney put the foot down.

Before then, Crick shot up to fourth to ensure the entire top six was covered by just 0.0627s.

Teams will learn and unpack a lot from the breakthrough session and will make numerous changes ahead of Practice 2 at 14:20 AEST.
