Palou on the edge of greatness

Palou wins Portland

By Thomas Miles

Alex Palou has been close to perfect in 2025, and he can wrap up a fourth IndyCar title at Portland this weekend.

The Spaniard can secure the 2025 crown with victory in the Grand Prix of Portland as he already enjoys a huge 121-point advantage over Pato O’Ward.

If and when he does clinch it, the Chip Ganassi driver will further climb into the IndyCar history books.

Palou would become just the fourth driver to win four or more IndyCar titles, levelling with Dario Franchitti, with only Scott Dixon ahead in the IndyCar era.

He would be one of just six all time since the start of the national championships in 1905 in a list that also includes AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti.

But an even bigger record and challenge could be matching or beating the record of the most wins in a season – 10 held by Foyt (1964) and Al Unser (1970).

Palou, who has eight wins in 2025, is excited about what is on offer.

“I’m very excited,” he said.

“I think there’s loads of reasons to be excited, but first of all, it (Portland) is a place that I love, that we’ve done really well in the past.

“It just feels like with such a magical season, we can still finish even better.

“I’m excited to go there and see how our car feels. It’s been feeling amazing this year everywhere we’ve been, especially road courses. Yeah, I’m excited to go there.”

Palou admits he has been pinching himself with the success he has enjoyed in 2025.

“I don’t really know how to answer that or how to explain how I feel about that,” he said.

“I don’t know if that makes sense, but I just don’t feel or I cannot really comprehend everything that’s happening, not only this year, but if I look back at ever since I started in INDYCAR, my dream was just to be a professional race car driver, and I never thought about records or anything like that.

“It’s not that I think about it, but whenever I get asked these questions, it’s amazing. Like to be in the position I am today, it’s amazing.”
