Brown holds off Feeney in tense one-two

Triple Eight further showcased its home-ground advantage as Will Brown held off Broc Feeney in a tight, but dominant one-two in Race 24 at Queensland Raceway.
The teammates were a cut above the rest of the field, taking the chequered flag line astern 8s clear of the best of the rest, Ryan Wood.
Whilst Triple Eight dominated, it was unclear who would emerge on top across the 39-lapper on the Super Soft impacted by a first-corner crash.
Feeney led the opening stint, but a 5s penalty for a jumped start handed track position to Brown.
Despite the Sprint Cup winner all over his bumper, the reigning champion held on to secure a breakthrough win by eight-tenths.
Brown took his first win in 16 races in a stretch dating back to the final race of the Melbourne SuperSprint at Albert Park.
The Triple Eight teammates nailed the starts and immediately set a one-two, but it was too good for Feeney, creeping before the lights went out and received a 5s penalty.
Despite the call, Feeney was adamant, saying “I did not jump the start.”
This left Wood to fight for third and he aggressively covered Stanaway until the PremiAir driver found the dirt and had to back out.
Further back, Murray got sandwiched between Payne and Randle off the line and he bounced over the wheel of the Tickford driver.
They found themselves involved in some more madness come Turn 1 where up to 10 cars were involved and scattered all over the gravel trap.
Kai Allen appeared to make contact with Aaron Cameron as they arrived at the fast right-hander, which sent both Ford rookies into a spin, sparking chaos.
Behind them, Le Brocq, Kostecki and Evans all tangled with each other, while MSR teammates Crick and Hill took avoiding action and toured the sand.
Cameron was lucky to keep on racing after getting bogged, while Kostecki, Le Brocq and Evans were all out of action
“I have no idea,” Le Brocq said when asked what happened.
“Everyone started running into each other ahead, and I just got hit from behind.”
After three laps, racing resumed, and Feeney was informed of his penalty and had to bolt clear of Brown.
Despite the Sprint Cup winner being the fastest car on the track, Brown was not giving up and was the only driver to remain within 3s.
The closest battle at the front of the field was forming up behind Stanaway with Waters hot on his heels and Reynolds, Mostert, De Pasquale and Golding not far behind.
The stops were sparked as early as Lap 12, but the leaders stayed out much later with Waters sparking the cycle on Lap 20.
The undercut and a 2.8s two-tyre change paid off for Tickford with the Monster Mustang well clear of four-tyre runners Stanaway, Mostert and Reynolds.
However, the biggest winners were De Pasquale and Fullwood, who gained significant track position via the undercut.
Feeney pulled 1.9s on Brown before stopping on Lap 23 where the #88 served its 5s penalty.
His Triple Eight teammate followed a lap later and despite a slightly slow left-rear tyre change, Brown emerged with a 2s advantage.
But now it was a straight fight between the teammates for the final 14 laps.
Feeney was a man on a mission, posting the fastest lap of the race to wipe out Brown’s advantage and catch his bumper within just two laps.
However, Brown still had pace up his sleeve and responded with the fastest lap of the race on Lap 28 to retain his slender half a second advantage.
Despite this, Feeney was also at PB pace with the teammates pumping out qualifying laps and clearing the field by more than 6s.
The fight for third was also tight as Wood used his fresh tyres to pick off Fullwood and De Pasquale.
The WAU driver reclaimed the podium place with a calculated dive on De Pasquale at Turn 3 as the Team 18 driver had little grip to fight with.
Whilst De Pasquale held on to a strong fourth, Fullwood fell out of the top 10, but still would have been happy to rise 13 spots to 11th.
Waters kept Payne half a second behind to bounce back into the top five with Mostert, Stanaway, Reynolds and Davison getting important top 10 results.
