Safety Car rules changed for Bathurst

Supercars has removed the slow zones after making another tweak to the Safety Car rules with the Bathurst 1000 on the horizon.

A Supercars Commission meeting on Thursday has seen the category backflip back to the 2023 rules for the upcoming Great Race.

As a result, the 80km/h speed limiter will not be seen unless an “emergency situation” takes place.

The infamous “slow zones” that caught out Jamie Whincup and the closure of the pit lane that were trailed at the AirTouch 500 at The Bend.

However, with the entire 103-lap race staying green, it was never put to the test under racing conditions.

They were brought in place after concerns of the length of the Safety Car Procedure, allowing cars to rise from the back of the pack to the front of the pack, and avoiding double stacking.

However, drivers will still be required to significantly slow in an incident area, which is defined by the traditional method of double-waved yellows.

Despite the reduction of limiters, drivers will still be monitored over yellow flag conditions.

The proposal of shifting the system yet again took just 18 minutes of discussion before unanimous support was raised in favour.

“The first priority in any Safety Car situation is always the safety of everyone involved — the drivers, the crews, marshals, and officials. That will never change,” Supercars CEO James Warburton said.

“This adjustment strikes the right balance between maintaining rigorous safety protocols and delivering the thrilling racing our fans expect. It’s about letting the best touring car drivers in the world race while ensuring the highest standards of safety.

“We’ve listened to feedback from teams, drivers, and officials. The revised approach reduces confusion, improves race flow, and ensures that Bathurst remains the ultimate test of skill and strategy.

“We’re backing this change with enhanced monitoring technology to make sure compliance is clear and consistent. Safety and fairness go hand in hand.”
