Feeney smashes Shootout

Broc Feeney takes another pole

By Thomas Miles

Broc Feeney is hunting for “redemption” and this drove him to pole by a huge four tenths in the Top 10 Shootout at Queensland Raceway.

It was Feeney’s a 13th pole position and possibly his most comprehensive as it already wraps up the 2025 qualifying award with five rounds still to come.

His 1:08.3493 was a massive four tenths faster than Wood, Brown and De Pasquale.

Zach Bates did another impressive lap in the wildcard, being the fastest of the used tyre runners and will start his third Supercars race from an outstanding fifth on the grid.

But once again Feeney stole the spotlight by getting a fourth Shootout in a row.

“I am pretty pumped,” he said.

“I knew we had a fast car and love these shootouts and to do it by almost half a second here is amazing.

“I was a little bit gutted yesterday so I just wanted to execute today.

“I set a pretty big lap in my reference and backed myself.

“I have so much confidence in myself and the car, which is something I am thriving on

“To have 13 poles is just insanity.”

P10 David Reynolds 1:09.6027

Chasing a second Shootout pole in a row, Reynolds opened the one-lap dash on used tyres.

However, his hopes of pole were destroyed at Turn 3 where he pinched the right front and locked up.

Kept the rest of it clean to record a 1:09.6027.

“Not too good and not the best lap. Used all my tyres to get into the Shootout. It is tricky to do it on the first lap when you are building,” Reynolds said.

“A bird shat on my window as I was coming through the last corner to start my lap and it distracted me!”

P8 Cameron Hill 1:09.3517

The MSR driver chasing a finals berth was also on used tyres and made good use of the outside kerbs to match Reynolds.

Avoided a lock-up at Turn 3 to ensure he was a solid 0.251s clear of Reynolds despite struggling to get it turned at the final corner.

“It was pretty good, but a little bit messy at the end. You have got to give it a crack,” Hill said.

“I was a little bit deep (at final turn) and these cars are right on the edge, so I was just trying not to tip it into the sand.”

P7 James Golding 1:09.3391

Also on used tyres Golding got good practice for Time Attack by returning to the Shootout.

Started strong to go 0.092s faster than the previous runners at the first split.

Managed to judge his braking markers to sneak ahead of Hill by 0.0126s despite finding the grass on the exit of the final turn.

“Not the tidiest I have done to be honest. Just had to get a feel for the tyres in the warm conditions,” Golding said.

P2 Ryan Wood 1:08.8122

Boosted by his first double podium appearance, Wood started his lap much earlier than anyone else as early as Turn 5.

He was also the first on fresh tyres, but was down on the opening split.

But the rubber switched on in the second sector as he found a huge two tenths before even more pace was on offer in the final run home.

Wood smashed them by half a second to push the session into a new dimension as the first in the “eight’s.”

“Not a bad lap, but there are some fast cars today. All in all pretty happy and felt my tyre preparation was pretty good,” Wood said.

P9 Chaz Mostert 1:09.3592

Mostert followed his teammate on fresh rubber and used all of the exit kerb coming out of Turn 2.

Did not quite make the apex at Turn 4, while he had another wild moment at the final turn which saw him fall 0.5470s adrift and only ahead of Reynolds.

“I don’t know mate. Just could not bring the tyre in so pretty frustrated with myself,” Mostert said.

P6 Brodie Kostecki 1:09.2376

Kostecki started well on used tyres being just 0.036s short at the first split, but slightly missed the Turn 3 apex.

However, more understeer was experienced at Turn 4 and he lost two tenths.

Went deep again at the final turn, but still settled in as best of the rest behind Wood despite being 0.4254s adrift.

“On used tyres and made the most of what we got,” Kostecki said.

P3 Will Brown 1:08.8300

Brown had new tyres up his sleeve and was aggressive going through Turn 1, using all of the exit kerb.

It paid off however, being a tenth up on Wood at the opening split.

After matching the second sector, Brown fell just short, being 0.0178s adrift of the WAU youngster.

Was not too bad and felt it would be close. I probably stuffed up the last corner with a bit of understeer

Hard when front tyres are not up to temp and you are using more road by blowing the speed and when you get on the kerb it loses the rear a bit.”

P5 Zach Bates 1:09.1427

All eyes were on Bates as he put the Supercheap Auto wildcard to the pointy end of the Shootout.

On used tyres he danced his way through the first two corners and was a tenth down at the first split.

Did a decent job at Turn 3 and had to use plenty of wheel work through the double left-hander.

This continued to the end, but he still had enough speed to stun yet again by being the fastest on a used tyre, just three tenths adrift of Wood and Brown.

“How good! I am so stoked. Knew the car had it and just needed to get it all together,” Bates said.

“It is fantastic to be in here and this is what I wanted to do my whole life.”

P1 Broc Feeney 1:08.3493

Having led all-but three of the sessions, Feeney was the man to beat and he was hungry after his race 24 penalty.

He was on fire straight away, nailing the first two corners to be more than two tenths clear of the field at the opening split alone.

Feeney nailed all three sectors to blow the field away by more than four tenths as Wood could only watch on speechless.

“I am bloody chuffed with that. Didn’t sleep too well thinking about yesterday so this means a lot. We will see what Anton does, but that was a big one,” Feeney said.

P4 Anton De Pasquale 1:09.0021

This left provisional pole sitter De Pasquale with a massive task to retain his position.

He used every bit of kerb available through the first two corners, but had a poor second sector.

This saw him slot into fourth, a distant six tenths away.
