De Pasquale stuns Feeney as Waters struggles

Anton De Pasquale 2025 Queensland Raceway

By Thomas Miles

Anton De Pasquale ended Broc Feeney’s run in P1 while Cameron Waters struggled, and Zach Bates stunned, to secure a ticket to the Shootout at Queensland Raceway.

Feeney had topped all but two sessions until Q2 on Sunday morning, where De Pasquale went 0.0347s faster with a 1:08.1543.

But the biggest cheers were in the Triple Eight wildcard garage where Bates put the #888 third ahead of the reigning champion Will Brown.

Meanwhile, it is turmoil at Tickford as Cameron Waters is forced to start his 300th Supercars race from 19th on the grid.

Q1

It was no surprise to see Triple Eight quickly establish its one-two with Feeney leading Brown by a tenth in the opening runs.

But some big names kept their powder dry with the likes of Crick, Fullwood, Mostert, Allen, Randle, Payne and Waters all in the drop zone ahead of the final laps.

Stanaway found himself in the middle of the pit lane congestion with Fullwood, De Pasquale and Randle all getting in his way and the kiwi.

Everyone still got out in the final minutes to post late laps to ensure they made the top 18.

Initially, it appeared this would finally be a session Triple Eight would not top with Murray leading Stanaway by half a tenth when the chequered flag fell.

However, Feeney managed to squeeze in a second lap to nail a 1:08.3255 to go a tenth clear and restore his dominance.

But the big headlines were at the other end of the leaderboard.

Waters struggled in #300 and fell agonisingly short of the cut.

The Monster Mustang was 0.0040s short of Cameron Hill in 18th and as a result was knocked out in Q1.

“Just not quick enough. Thought we found some gains yesterday, but we are struggling on this tyre pretty much from when we exit pit lane to when we come in,” Waters said.

He was not the only big Ford name with rookie Kai Allen and fellow Tickford driver Thomas Randle also not fast enough.

It was a tough session for BJR with three of its cars in the drop zone, but Macauley Jones impressed, finishing the segment seventh.

Q2

Feeney fired the first blow in Q2 and looked untouchable, being three tenths clear of the best of the rest Murray.

However, it was the Triple Eight wildcard that took the fight to the #88, recording an impressive 1:08.5738 to go 0.0304s clear on fresher tyres.

The likes of Reynolds and Golding also posted solid laps to go within a tenth.

On the other side of the Triple Eight garage, Brown did something different as the only driver not to post a lap in the first six minutes of the session.

When the green tyre runs started Feeney fired back to the top, flying to a 1:08.2544.

Despite further improving by half a tenth, Feeney could not stop De Pasquale from ending his run with an impressive 1:08.1543, which was just 0.0347s clear.

Bates also wowed by putting the wildcard third ahead of Brown and Kostecki.

Mostert avoided a scare to rise from the drop zone to sixth ahead of his teammate, while Golding, Hill and Reynolds also secured tickets to the Shootout.

Stanaway was the near miss, being forced to start 11th after falling 0.0024s short.

Payne also had a close call ahead of Courtney, while Jones completed the top 14.

The likes of Percat, Le Brocq, Murray and Davison could not make the leaps required at the end.

With the 10 tickets taken, the Shootout for pole will be held at 11.40 AEST.
