Azcona takes maiden TCR World Tour pole

Azcona in TCR pits

Mikel Azcona has taken the first-ever TCR World Tour pole position at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park in convincing style.

After some early scares, TCR World Tour is on track and up and running at The Bend with a busy start on Saturday.

Following the freight delays, the field enjoyed a welcome and unexpected shakedown on Friday evening before practice on Saturday morning.

Teams then had a little window to take on qualifying, where Spanish Hyundai driver Azcona dominated.

He took his first pole of the 2025 season by a huge margin of seven tenths as the only driver to record a 1m54s time.

His 1:54.4064 was 0.7229s clear of Norbert Michelisz, while championship leader Yann Ehrlacher was more than a second off the pace.

Flying the Aussie flag with pride was reigning TCR Australia champion Josh Buchan.

Buchan put in a brilliant lap to secure a strong fourth as the only local in the top 11.

Despite being very young and raw, HMO Customer Racing teammate Ryan MacMillan still fought his way into Q2 to qualify ahead of fellow rookie Cody Burcher and experienced Brad Harris.

The first TCR World Tour race at The Bend is at 14.10 ACST.
