Ipswich welcomes back Supercars in masses

Will Davison Queensland Raceway

By Thomas Miles

The biggest Supercars crowd at Queensland Raceway in 14 years welcomed the category, firming the venue’s chance of becoming a regular fixture.

In its first taste of Supercars in six years, there was a great vibe around the Ipswich Super440, and that has translated into the attendance figures.

A total three-day attendance of 51,723 was the biggest Supercars crowd at Queensland Raceway since 2011, when it 50,425 watched Craig Lowndes record a clean sweep.

It is a boost for the event, which used to attract well over 60,000 fans during the 2000s.

Whilst the “Paperclip” remained the same, the Queensland Raceway venue itself has changed with numerous upgrades from new pit facilities to sun shades on the hill.

The man who made it all possible, Tony Quinn, was proud to see Supercars back at the venue he breathed new life into.

“When I brought the track I had a lot to do like qualifying last and fighting your way to the front,” he said.

“But I have been helped by a great team of people that work here.

“We knew if we presented a good product there would be a chance of getting the Supercars back.

“Now it has happened, it has been so good. I have not met one grumpy person and everyone has been so complimentary

I would be flabbergasted if we did not see the Supercars here next year.”

Returning Supercars CEO James Warburton was impressed.

“It’s amazing. I’ve always said that people vote with their feet, and just to have the turnout that we’ve got here — six years that we haven’t been into one of our heartland markets — it’s fantastic to be here,” Warburton told Fox Sports.

“I can’t take any credit as the new guy. It’s our Chairman, our Board, Supercars who can for putting in another round, which is what the fans want to see.

“Obviously, Quinny and the circuit, making the improvements that he has. We love being here and finalising the Sprint Cup today and onto the Enduro Cup. We’d love to be back.

“For us, it’s about getting all the partners together post-event and seeing if we can all make it work with support.

“Obviously we look for support — we race with our government partners, and they’re huge events to put on.

“But again, without the fans and the teams and the drivers and the show we put on, we wouldn’t be here.

“So, as I said, they vote with their feet and we’re very proud to be here.”
