Drifting taking over Time Attack

World Time Attack

By Thomas Miles

There will be many attractions putting on a show at the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge and one of them will be drifting.

A total of 20 drivers will battle it out for the Garrett International Drifting Cup at the annual event at Sydney Motorsport Park.

They are bringing plenty of quality with a combined total of over 20 national championship titles from across the globe, descending on World Time Attack.

According to WTAC’s Drift Operations Manager Dan Mackie, it is being built up as the “OG’s v the Young Guns.”

Whilst many are coming from all over the world, there will be plenty of local Aussies to cheer on.

Luke Fink, Rob Whyte, Scott Schembri, Alex Sciaccia, and Fernando Wiehrl will all wave the Aussie flag with pride.

There are also a group of Aussie “top dogs” from Saxon Moyes, Jason Ferron, Matty Hill, Matt Harvey, and Brodie Maher.

However, there are many global stars coming to take the trophy.

Naoki Nakamura is coming from Japan and ready to unleash his 1000-horsepower S13.

As is Masashi Yokoi in his Nissan Silvia S14.

There is a strong group of Kiwis coming from across the ditch from New Zealand.

Leading the way is “Mad” Mike Whiddett, who holds the record for the fastest Mazda and Rotary times at Pikes Peak.

He will be driving a 1976 Mazda RX3 808.

From Wellington is Jaron Olivecrona, while Michael Thorley and Nick Owen are some of many Nissan drivers.

Waving the Irish flag with pride will be Derek Newsome in his 1991 Nissan Silvia S13 which won a round of Global Wars.

Many will also double up in the “Yeah The Boys and Yeah The Girls” drift sessions that will take place.

Fink (Nissan Patrol) Jay Duca (Holden VL Commodore) Mike Lake (BMW) Whyte (Porsche 911) Nakamura (Nissan R35 GTR) Ben Wilkinson (Mazda RX7) Jarrod Klingberg (Toyota Corolla) Callum Matthews (Nissan R35 GTR) Jordan Sanderson (Ford S650 Spec 5 RTR Mustang) and Peter Kay in a Levi Clarke tribute drift rod make up the Yeah The Boys field.

The Yeah The Girls crew also features plenty of talent from Kahli Bell (Nissan Silvia) Jessica Schembri (Toyota Cressida) and Sarah Jane Holland (S15).
