Walls completes Super Sunday with breakthrough win

Jackson Walls wins Super2

By Thomas Miles

Tickford’s domination in Super2 is finally over with Jackson Walls breaking through on a perfect Sunday at Queensland Raceway.

Tickford had won the last five races and two rounds, but the streak is at an end thanks to Walls.

He continued Triple Eight’s perfect weekend so far by converting pole position into a maiden Super2 victory.

Nash Morris tried desperately to maintain Tickford’s golden run, but ultimately had to settle for second.

Only nine-tenths split the leaders after a late Safety Car to collect Campbell Logan.

Lochie Dalton rounded out the podium, while Cameron McLeod restricted Rylan Gray to fifth, which secured Walls’ breakthrough round win.

Walls and Morris side by side into Turn 1 and the polesitter won the battle despite “Flash” getting a better launch off the line.

The leaders were side by side again when they arrived at Turn 3, but again, Walls held firm on the inside.

Behind them, Dalton kept hold of third, while McLeod jumped Gray despite finding the dirt in the run down to Turn 1.

Following his Shootout heroics, Bates was fighting to stay in the top 10, but had a big lock-up under braking at the final turn and speared off through the gravel and plummeted to the back.

After five laps Walls was able to skip a second clear of Morris and Dalton.

Whilst it was clean at the front of the field, there were plenty of battle packs merging throughout the field.

Most of them focused around Vaughan as he dropped like a stone from seventh on the grid.

Come the halfway mark he had no pace left having cooked the clutch off the start.

This was also the phase where Morris started to gain ground and come within a second.

The arrival of a Safety Car could not have come at a better time for Morris as a beached Logan at Turn 3 set up an interruption.

A loss of front brake pressure saw a helpless Logan spear into the sand at the end of the back straight.

It was his second off-track excursion after Rueben Goodall forced him wide at Turn 1 and he found the gravel at the final turn on his own.

This set-up a six-minute dash to the finish and Walls had to earn his first win with Morris breathing down his neck.

The fight for sixth between Burcher and Sweeny got intense as they tried to go through the double left hander side by side.

Sweeny was stuck on the outside and wheel-to-wheel contact entering Turn 5 saw the BRT driver forced wide and lose eight spots.

At the other end of the straight Sweeny was now side by side with Jobe Stewart, but Max Geoghegan also tried to join the party on the outside and all this resuled in was the Image Racing rookie taking a tour through the gravel.

The final conrer remained a hot spot as Bates gave Ayrton Hobson a heavy hit and the Mustang was luckly not to spin around after being rotated 45 degrees.

Sweeny and Stewart were involved in another skirmish as the BRT driver secured 13th after one move where he escorted both Stewart and Bradi Owen wide at the final bend.

To add more drama, reports from the pit lane suggested some rain, but Walls pushed on to ensure Morris could not give him a late scare.

It was a grand way for Walls to announce himself in grand style.

The mountain is now calling for Super2 with Bathurst the next round.
