Stewart focused on enduros, not future

Cooper Murray and Jobe Stewart at Erebus launch

Mount Gambier rookie Jobe Stewart will achieve the dream of racing in Supercars on home turf at The Bend this weekend with even bigger things potentially on the line.

Having been part of the Erebus Academy since 2017, eight years later, Stewart will suit up for the Supercars squad alongside Cooper Murray in the AirTouch 500 at The Bend.

Being a country SA product, it is fitting that his debut drive will arrive at the venue he not only grew up watching, but has also played a massive part of his career.

“To be racing at the closest track to my home town for my first race is just awesome,” Stewart told Auto Action.

“It is the perfect debut, I guess, and has a deeper meaning.

“I went to the first one in 2018 and just about all of them since then.

“It is where  I also did my first laps in a race car at in the Toyota 86, so it is probably the track I have done the most laps at and it is pretty close to my heart because of that.

“There will be some extra support. All my close family will be there and some supporters from sponsors and friends will be coming up.”

While there will be plenty of emotion this weekend, Stewart is switched on and ready for the biggest drive of his growing career.

Since being part of the Erebus Academy, he has worked his way up the ranks in his signature quiet, but hard-working style.

The highlight was winning the Super3 title on the streets of Adelaide for Image Racing, the team he represents currently in Super2.

With testing at Queensland Raceway and an evaluation day at Winton under his belt in the Gen3 Camaro, Stewart feels primed for the big enduro campaign.

“I am ready for it, especially after the QR test day,” he said.

“That was the biggest help going through everything we have practiced at the workshop and getting comfortable in the car.

“Learnt a few things and tried some set-ups.

“There are a little bit of nerves, but I will just focus on doing the best job I can.

“I am not too worried about it and will make sure I am putting in all of the one percenters and doing the little things right in my preparation.

“Pretty happy with the progress so far and will take the nerves as they come.”

Stewart will make his step up to the main game already, with speculation surrounding his future.

There are rumours suggesting Jack Le Brocq could be returning to Matt Stone Racing and being one of two youngsters, along with Jarrod Hughes, co-driving with Erebus this year, has been linked to the seat.

While the path mapped out for Stewart by Barry Ryan and Betty Klimenko has always involved a main-game Supercars drive, the youngster is not thinking that far ahead with all focus on The Bend and Bathurst where Erebus has great form.

“It is on my mind a little bit, but the enduros are still 100 per cent the focus,” hew said.

“If I perform and do the best job I can, hopefully that can bring some opportunities in the future.

“I have been speaking with Barry for a while and he and Betty have supported me since day one. I appreciate what they have done for me over many years.

“The results we have had in Super2 do not show the potential. I am pretty happy with what I have been doing so far.

“The more things I can do right and positive driving on track shows that I can be confident I can be ready for the main game.

“But I just have to keep my head down and not worry about it too much.”
