Allen delighted by unexpected podium

Boosted by a well-timed Safety Car, Kai Allen was thrilled to walk away with another podium in his growing Supercars trophy cabinet.
Lining up 22nd on the grid, a podium would have been the furthest thing from Allen’s mind, but the race played into his hands.
The Grove Racing rookie was one of three drivers to stay out for 30 laps and was rewarded by a well-timed Safety Car, which allowed the trio to complete both compulsory stops under yellows.
However, Allen still had to fight with the other member of the back-to-back stopping trio Andre Heimgartner, falling to seventh.
But both Cameron Waters and Allen held strong to secure stunning podiums, having only been caught by the dominant Broc Feeney.
The third place was Allen’s second trophy of the weekend and fourth of his ever-growing rookie season.
The results bring the Mount Gambier youngster right into the Finals picture, reducing the deficit from 80 to 20 points.
Allen acknowledged there was some luck involved, but felt he and the team were rewarded for rolling the dice.
“Qualifying did not go our way and the car wasn’t quite where we wanted it to be, but we put that behind us and had a really good strategy which helped
us get the result,” he said.
“Everyone says it’s a bit lucky to end up with the podium and I do believe the race went our way, but I still had to work hard for it as I stayed out there for 30 laps while everyone was pitting, so I am super stoked we were able to get the podium.
“The team is nailing the strategies at the moment and it goes to show the brainpower that we’ve got in the garage and some really smart guys, and we work very well together, so pumped as a team that we can keep making those calls and being on top of everyone.
“To have four podiums in my rookie year was certainly unexpected but I’m finding my feet here and I believe I have the best team down Pit Lane.
“Saturday’s podium was probably the most fun I have had all year
To get that podium was pretty cool in front of such a huge crowd at Queensland Raceway, so it was just an awesome weekend.”
