Walls steals thrilling Super2 pole

Jackson Walls tops Super2 practice

By Thomas Miles

The Sunday Super2 pole was changing hands from start to finish until Jackson Walls snatched it at the death.

In a session that contained 12 lead changes until Walls made the decisive blow by being the only driver to post a time in the 1m08s window.

His 1:08.9303 was 0.1326s clear of a Tickford trio featuring Nash Morris, Lochie Dalton and Rylan Gray.

The pack of Mustangs carried on with Cameron McLeod and Bailey Sweeny also having turns at the top before being fifth and sixth.

After topping a stunning session, Walls could not believe it after getting a first pole for Triple Eight.

“I am just shocked,” he said.

“I could have done it before the red flag, but was not doing a good enough job.

“I kept making the same mistake at the last corner and I finally did it with the last lap.

“Didn’t have the delta on the dash so figured I would not have it.

“These guys put in so much work behind the scenes so this pole is a bit late for them, but better late than never.”

The session did not include Jarrod Hughes with his Image Racing ZB Commodore unable to be repaired after its sickening hit with Mason Kelly at Turn 3.

It was a frantic start to Super2 Sunday qualifying with six lead changes taking place in the opening five minutes.

There was nothing in it straight away with just 0.0001s between McLeod and Sweeny after the opening lap.

Soon it was the turn of the Tickford teammates with Dalton leading Gray.

Gomersall then enjoyed his brief time at the top before hit back Sweeny shot a tenth clear.

Dalton returned to the top before Walls finally made the decisive move of the first stint.

His 1:09.4573 was 0.0836s clear of Dalton and remained in P1 for the remainder of the first half of the session as things finally settled down.

Some struggled in the search of speed as Campbell Logan went off at final corner, while McLeod had a big lock-up and found the gravel at Turn 3.

The session lit up once again with six minutes to go when Sweeney, Walls and Gray showed speed on fresh tyres.

Walls held the top spot, only for Gray to go 0.0647s less than a second before the red flag was called for Max Geoghegan, who was in the middle of nowhere in the infield below the back straight due to mechanical gremlins.

This set up a four-minute dash where Dalton and McLeod initially jumped into the top four.

Dalton pushed on and posted a purple final sector to steal pole from his teammate Gray, only for Morris to do the same and repay the favour.

“Flash” looked set for pole, only for Walls to post purple first and third sectors to fly into the “eight’s” and steal pole by 0.1326s.

Super2 goes racing at 12.25 AEST.
