Revitalised Wood eager to catch Triple Eight

Ryan Wood is boosted by being the “best of the rest” at Queensland Raceway and hopes to catch Triple Eight despite it being “on another level.”
In Supercars’ return to Ipswich from a six-year hiatus it is no surprise Triple Eight has used its test-track expertise to dominate the weekend so far.
Broc Feeney and Will Brown shared the wins on offer as they appeared to be a cut above the rest with the teammates topping all six sessions so far.
However, one driver has emerged as their nearest rival in WAU youngster Ryan Wood.
Wood is enjoying one of his most consistent weekends, stringing consecutive top five results together for the first time in his career with a pair of thirds on Saturday at the Ipswich Super440.
The 21-year-old feels like he is driving at a high level, but believes Triple Eight is another story.
“I am just driving like I normally do, but still not good enough to get close to these two,” Wood said.
“To get two trophies is really cool and our car seems pretty speedy, feel like we are best of the rest.
“If it rains we might (catch Triple Eight). But in the dry they are just on another level.
“They are driving really well as well. It is not like their cars are streets ahead because I feel our cars are really good, but we are just two, three tenths off.
“Over 39 laps you can see how much they have beaten us by so we need to find some more in race trim.
“If we can qualify up front again I feel like we can hang with them for five laps which I tried before.
“Feeney was still too good even in wet. He just keeps raising the bar, and in any circumstance is the benchmark, so we need to match that which goes for every driver and team in the lane, which is quite exciting.”
Today the longer and tougher 63-lap race awaits with Wood determined to continue strengthening his Finals place as he has risen to eighth, 52 points above the cut line.
The WAU Kiwi believes more pace can be found as he feels he is building form ahead of the all-important enduros.
“We need to dial in a little bit into the data,” Wood said.
“There are some things I need to focus on, but I do feel I have made a lot of in terms of how to control a race a bit smarter.
“We have always put our focus on getting in that 10 and it slipped away through things out of our control.
“Fingers crossed we can keep hold of it with another top 10, but we are starting to get a bit of momentum at a nice time ahead of enduros where it feels like we are half a chance which is really cool.”
