Feeney leads Triple Eight 1-2

By Thomas Miles

Broc Feeney led teammate Will Brown in a Triple Eight 1-2 in the final Supercars practice of the VAILO Adelaide 500.

The Triple Eight teammates were the only ones in the 1m19s window with Feeney’s 1:19.7649 emerging on top by 0.1894s.

The next best was Thomas Randle, who emerged ahead of Brodie Kostecki and Cameron Waters with the heat, wind and track condition leaving drivers to state the “track is nowhere.”

Whilst teams escaped the 30-minute session without significant damage, it was not without drama as some including Aaron Love were caught out by the mess left by the Trans Am crash at Turn 13.

The session began in searing heat with temperatures already approaching 35 degrees at 10.00 in the morning.

The start of the session marked wins for Matt Stone Racing and Team 18, who completed mammoth overnight rebuilds to ensure Cameron Hill and David Reynolds respectively hit the track.

The other driver part of the Turn 8 chaos Richie Stanaway was also driving a repaired Mustang and he was the first to spear off at Turn 13.

The Kiwi caught the oil left by a significant Trans Am crash and skated through the outside grass, just missing the barrier.

Due to the messy track, drivers had to adjust their lines and ride more of the inside kerb to avoid it.

The Triple Eight Camaros were fast out of the gates with Brown leading Feeney.

Brown was the only driver to post a 1m20s time in the opening laps, being two tenths clear of Feeney and Waters.

Randle was the first to go past the Triple Eight Camaros, posting a 1:20.3598 and was followed by Davison, two tenths adrift.

Meanwhile, Reynolds gave everyone at Team 18 a cheer by putting the #20 into the top three.

This soon became sixth as Feeney flew into the 1m19s bracket with a strong 1:19.7649, half a second clear of Randle.

Courtney lost it at the end of Wakefield Street and had to perform a flick-spin in the run off.

After 10 minutes of running the reds arrived for Love, who also got caught out by Turn 13.

The rookie just caught the oil and could not contain the Mustang on corner exit and slid out of control into the barriers all the way at the end of the Turn 14 hairpin.

In Brown’s pursuit of chasing his teammate he found the Turn 4 run off, while Golding chose to try and complete the corner, but had a close call with the barriers on exit and rode the grass.

Kostecki rose to as high as second, but did hit the turn 1 tyre bundle.

Reynolds had strong early speed, but reported “something came loose” which saw the #20 stay in the garage for the last seven minutes.

During the late dash in the final minutes, many got caught out by early kerb strikes.

Brown managed to complete his final lap and rose one position from third to second with a purple second split, while Randle rose to third at the death.

Now all eyes turn to the Top 10 Shootout.
