David Reynolds has carried on his strong start to the VAILO Adelaide 500 by being fastest in Practice 2.
After being second to Courtney on Thursday, Reynolds set his session-topping 1:19.4804 early on with his sixth of 15 laps across the 30-minute session.
The Team 18 driver was almost knocked off by Cameron Waters, who came within 0.0840s.
Walkinshaw Andretti United teammates Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood completed the top four.
Championship leader Will Brown stayed in the top five ahead of Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney.
Once again sunny skies, but warmer temperatures greeted the field for the final practice before qualifying.
Everyone aside from the PremiAir Racing Camaros hit the track instantly.
Payne started strong, going straight into the 1m20s window and then being the first into the 1m19s threshold.
The Grove Racing Kiwi was flying ahead of the rest with his 1:19.8852 being 0.3797s clear of Courtney, who proved topping Thursday was no fluke.
Golding waited until the six minute mark to post a lap and it was worth it as he went straight to second before Wood snuck ahead.
Whilst they pushed hard, none could join Payne in the 1m19s club in the opening runs.
The closest was Wood with a 1:20.0028, while Murray emerged as high as 19th from his first four laps in Erebus.
It was not until the 10 minute mark when Payne was joined by Mostert, who came within 0.0253s.
But Reynolds was going even faster, with a rapid final two sectors pushing the #20 to a 1:19.4804, an impressive four tenths faster than the #19.
Mostert also improved on his second lap, reducing Reynolds’ lead to a tenth.
Another 10 minutes later Brown was the latest to do the job, with the #87 shooting to third ahead of Payne.
During the final five minutes Kostecki had a fan waving around in the cockpit.
But this did him from snatching third from Brown and immediately in his slipstream was Heimgartner.
Feeney fired a late lap to split the pair, while Triple Eight teammate Brown also saved his best for the very end to rise into the top five.
Waters had the biggest dip, posting a strong 1:19.5644, which was just not enough to beat Reynolds.
Despite not improving at the very end, the Team 18 driver was still pushing the limits, getting as close as he dared to the Turn 12 tyres.
It was a clean session, but there were still a couple of small moments.
Davison was pushing hard through Turn 6 and rubbed the tyre wall on corner exit.
Courtney overran the braking area at Turn 9 and had a little spin.
The intensity lifts with qualifying this evening where the aim of the game is making the Top 10 Shootout.
