Sargent “stoked” to clinch Porsche title

The Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge has saluted Thomas Sargent, who was crowned as the 2022 champion at the dramatic season finale at the Island Magic on Saturday.
Sargent was “pumped” to continue his thrilling duel with Ryan Wood for the title into the final round at Phillip Island with 32 points the difference in favour of the former.
Despite being down, Wood was not out and produced the perfect weekend, flying to pole position and winning both races that were possible after race 2 was washed out.
Even with the mighty effort, the Kiwi could not quite knock off Sargent, who followed his rival every step of the way.
The championship leader finished second in each race to keep his perfect record of finishing in the top two all year for CHE Racing Team.
Sargent took seven wins on his way to claiming a second straight major national crown after winning the Australian Formula Ford Series last year.
He will now take up the challenge of racing in America in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Championship in 2023 for McElrea Racing.
But for now Sargent is just relieved to lift the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge trophy after winning a gruelling arm wrestle with Wood by 19 points.
“It has been a very, very hard fought year,” he said.
“The racing has been awesome between Ryan and I and the rest of the field so I’ve learnt so much about Porsche driving and race craft.
“I have had a great time and I’m super stoked to have wrapped up the championship, its something we want to achieve and it’s been amazing to do it with the CHE Racing Team again.
“This car has a lot of pedigree having won the Carrera Cup championship with Cameron and now Sprint Challenge with myself.
“That was one good thing coming into this year we knew where we stood with the car and the team, so it came down to me and it showed in the end.
“It was great to wrap up the series win and I’m looking forward to what is to come next year.”
Brett Boulton completed his comprehensive Morris Pro-Am title win, while Class B honours went to Lachlan Harburg after he held off Jacob Li.
