Sargent looking to leave OZ on a magic high

By Timothy Neal

Porsche Sprint Challenge leader Thomas Sargent is aiming to wrap up the series at Phillip island’s Island Magic round this weekend.

The #47 Tegra Australia/CHE racer has led the series since his clean sweep at the Queensland Raceway in round 2, and hasn’t drifted off the podium once for the whole year with seven wins.

He leads Ryan Wood by 32 points, with the pair streaks ahead of Aron Shields in third place, with the two of them having occupied P1 and P2 in all but one race this season when Woods took a P9 in race two at Tailem Bend after experiencing mechanical issues.

It could be Sargent’s final racing round on Australian shores for some time, as he heads to North America to contest in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Championship with McElrea Racing.

“I’m pretty pumped on returning to Phillip Island, it’s up there as one of my favourite tracks in Australia,” said Sargent.

“It seems to suit my driving style, it’s a very fast and flowing layout, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve had great success there in the past and I’m excited to return.

“Carrera Cup hasn’t run around there since 2018, so everyone’s a bit short on data around Phillip Island and it will be interesting to see how everyone compares on car set-up and times.

“It’s been good to have someone pushing me all season and Ryan (Wood) thinks the exact same thing. It’s been good to have each other to push along and develop ourselves as drivers for later on in our careers. We’ve both been racing really hard and I feel like quite fairly across the season, so whichever way it goes after Phillip Island we’ve done a great job.”

The last time Sargent went around the Island was in the National Formula Ford Championship at the same event last year, where he stamped his authority on a dominant season to take the 2021 title.

The 20-year-old New South Welshman has made a habit of winning over the last few years, and along with his Formula Ford title, has taken out two class wins at the Bathurst 6 Hour to go with his litany of victories in 2022.
