Tomsett takes wet Super2 opener

Ryan Tomsett managed to overcome the wet conditions and start the Super2 Bathurst weekend on top.
While wets were needed throughout, the track dried and the session was not decided until the very end.
Many drivers surged to the top of the timesheets at the death, but none could match Tomsett.
He was the only driver to record a 2m30s time with his 2:30.8624 a solid 0.2718s clear of Rueben Goodall.

Cameron McLeod was fast throughout and the only other driver within half a second.
Fellow Supercars co-drivers Zach Bates and Jarrod Hughes rounded out the top five.
Bates opened the batting, posting 2:35.874 seven tenths clear of Hodgson.
It was not until the 20 minute mark when Dalton was the first into 2m34s window as track started to dry with the rain easing.
Hodgson also improved by a second to demote Bates to third ahead of McLeod.
Despite the conditions, drivers impressively did not cause a red flag, but there were still nervy moments.
Logan had a wild slide in front of teammate Hillyer, while Walls had a snap sideways at the top of the mountain, where Bates also pushed the limits.
The only driver to have a major moment was Rueben Goodall, who went off at the Chase.
Gillis also missed lots of running due to power steering gremlins.
Sinni stayed in the garage during the session, while Webb restricted his return session to just three laps.
Things kicked off in the final 10 minutes with McLeod leading the way.
After coming within a tenth of the lead, he finally knocked off Bates as the first to surge into the 2m33s window.
His 2:33.8225 put eight tenths of the rest of the field which was now led by Hillyer
Bates was the first to join him, finding an extra half a second.
But the reigning champion did not stay there long as McLeod responded by flying into the 2m32s threshold, while Tomsett also eclipsed the #1.
With the track getting faster and faster, many drivers nailed their final laps as the times tumbled when the chequered flag was waved.
Bates, McLeod and Goodall all flew into the 2m31’s but Tomsett was a cut above.
He was the only driver to find the 2m30’s and topped the session by two tenths.
It will be interesting to see if conditions are as challenging in Practice 2 at 14.40 AEDT.
