TCR TITLE CONTENDER JORDAN COX PENALISED FOR BATHURST RACE 1 INCIDENT

By Bruce Williams

Following an investigation by Motorsport Australia race officials overnight, TCR Australia Championship title contender Jordan Cox has suffered a blow to his title hopes after being penalised for an incident with Luke King in the opening race at Mount Panorama yesterday.

Cox has been handed a five second penalty for the incident with King which happened at The Cutting late in Race 1. The contact forced King out of the race and into pit lane with damage.

Jordan Cox was disappointed in the findings “It’s heart breaking for us to have a decision like this, it hurts, we were in with a good shot, we race hard and fair and that’s been the GRM phylophisy and they have pushed it and have backed me all the way.

“It’s disappointing and we just have to reset and move forward with the next couple of races, and race hard but fair”, Cox siad this morning while talking to Stan Sports Greg Rust.

As a result, the Swyftx GRM Peugeot driver has dropped from ninth and a front row start for the inverted Race 2 grid to 14th, losing ground to series leader Tony D’Alberto in his Honda.

The penalty means that D’Alberto’s lead in the title has stretched back out to 49 points over Audi’s Will Brown, who has been promoted into second place, with Cox two points behind Brown.

Realistically, Hyundai driver Josh Buchan is the only other title contender. He sits 72 points behind D’Alberto.

Another penalty in the race that has mixed up the finishing order was for Michael Caruso, who was also penalised for contact with a rival, also believed to be involving Luke King on Mountain Straight on the opening lap.

Caruso crossed the line in fifth position, but the penalty has demoted him to 10th, and in a perverted stroke of luck, Caruso will start from pole for today’s first race thanks to the inverted top 10 starting order.

Caruso will have Buchan alongside on the front-row of this morning’s race, with Frenchman Teddy Clairet and Lachlan Mineeff on row two.

Race 2 starts at 9:25am AEDT and can be seen live on Stan Sport.
