THE LIMITED program on the final day of the Penrite Sandown 500 was thrown into disarray with a big accident after the start of the third Toyota 86 Racing Series race.

On the opening lap John Iafolla’s Toyota launched off a kerb at turn 8 and flew across the armco on the inside of the circuit, bounced off a tender vehicle and landed on its side. The driver emerged from the crash and was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

The race was immediately red-flagged and not restarted, leaving Aaron Borg the round winner ahead of Luke King, Tim Brook, Jaylyn Robotham and Dylan Thomas. Borg’s previous two race wins also elevated him to the lead in the points ahead of Brook.

There was an extensive delay as repairs to the fence were made. That also meant the cancellation of the final race for the year for the Paynter Dixon Touring Car Masters.

Steve Johnson (Ford Mustang) had already been confirmed as the series (for the third in a row) winner and number one in Pro Masters ahead of John Bowe (Holden Torana A9X) and Ryal Harris (Chev Camaro). Behind Adam Bressington (Camaro), fifth overall Jim Pollicina (A9X) is the Pro-Am victor while Pro Sports went to Al Boughen (Mercury Comet).

The one race that did go ahead before the feature, was the second race in the Dunlop Super 3 Series. Jordan Boys (Holden Commodore VF) delivered Image Racing its third tier two or development series victory. The last being with Owen Kelly in 2007 at Oran Park.

Boys led the entire 22 laps, withstanding the pressure from round six winner overall Jack Perkins (Eggleston Motorsport VF). The latter’s teammate Will Brown came home third, once he was able to pass Bryce Fullwood (Matt White Motorsport Nissan Altima). Fullwood accumulated enough points to claim the title with a round to go.

Fifth and sixth across the line were Triple 8 VF team mates Kurt Kostecki and Brenton Grove ahead of Ash Walsh (Matt Stone Racing VF), Justin Ruggier (EM VF) and race one winner Tyler Everingham (MWM Altima). They were followed by Matt Chahda (Ford Falcon FG/X), Adam Marjoram (IM VF) Jack Smith (Brad Jones Racing VF) and Zane Goddard (MWM Altima).

Thomas Randle (Tickford Racing FG/X) was an early casualty when a water hose came loose while Dylan O’Keeffe (Garry Rogers Motorsport VF) retired with steering damage following contact with Goddard.
