Sweeny joins RX8 Cup field

By Thomas Miles

The RX8 Cup returns to Winton for round of the 2024 season where former TCR star Bailey Sweeny will bolster the field.

After Ric Shaw emerged victorious from the February season opener in Phillip Island, a 20-car field including Kiwi visitor Andy Duffin will be taking on the “Action Track.”

Shaw leads the championship after winning three of the four races at Phillip Island with reigning champion Justin Barnes the only other driver to enter victory lane.

Barnes took out race 3 but could not stop Shaw from taking the honours and the #1 will be keen to reassert its dominance.

Sweeny will be hoping to race those big names on category debut as he makes his racing return in 2024.

The former TCR star was left without a drive in 2024 after an unsuccessful attempt to get onto the Super2 grid.

However, the skills of Sweeny are not in doubt having been a consistent TCR front runner.

The 21-year-old was was in the box seat to win the 2023 TCR Australia title after taking four wins at Symmons Plains, Winton and Sandown, only for a nightmare weekend to strike at the Bathurst International finale and fall from first to third in the standings.

Maisie Place, 24, will be another driver to watch in a three-car family run team with her father, which has racked up over a century of RX8 Cup starts.

Podcast: We’re going to Taupo… Tow Paw… Whatever. Supercars is back!

After a break that feels like months, the Supercars Championship is back and headed across the ditch to Taupo in the middle of the North Island. And yes, Brodie Kostecki will be there! As will the rain.

Somehow, the rain will also be in China for F1’s return to 中国. Philip Island was stunning on the weekend, just gone, if a little cold, but we chatted about whether Supercars should return to the land of penguins.

Plus, there’s more… all the news in the way only the Auto Action RevLimiter can deliver.
