Ford Mustang GT4 set for Aussie debut

By Thomas Miles

The sweeping seaside circuit of Phillip Island will be the scene of the first racing laps of the new Ford Mustang GT4 in Australia.

The Mustang GT4 will be racing in the GT4 Australia championship during the SpeedSeries trip to Phillip Island which is fittingly celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Mustang.

Driving the new beast will be the experienced steerer and recent Bathurst 6 Hour winner George Miedecke and Super2 talent Rylan Grey.

Also being a proprietor of a Ford dealership, Miedecke is honoured to be a part of a new chapter in Ford’s racing history in Australia.

“The arrival of our Mustang GT4 marks a new era of Ford Performance in Australia, and we are thrilled that Miedecke Motorsport will showcase its capabilities on the track,” he said.

“This car embodies the spirit of performance and passion that defines the Mustang legacy.

“I’ve been associated with Ford for decades across my racing career” Andrew Miedecke enthused.

“And this new Ford Mustang speaks to me, the engineering and build quality is amazing. Multimatic have built a car that is designed to be economical to run, easy to repair and I think will suit the driving styles of Aussie racing drivers.”

“As Ford dealers, we’re also excited about the 60th anniversary celebrations and are looking forward to the seventh-generation Mustang arriving on Australian roads later this year.”

Global director of Ford Performance Motorsports, Mark Rushbrook said its a significant moment for the Mustang, which in the last five years alone has made a massive impact down under in Supercars and now steps into the GT world.

“The Mustang holds a special place in the hearts of racing enthusiasts worldwide, and seeing the GT4 version on Australian tracks is truly a momentous occasion,” Rushbrook said.

“We are proud to be part of the global expansion of Mustang in motorsport.”

The Ford Mustang GT4 has been turning heads ever since it was revealed in 2023.

The car made its racing debut in the VP Racing Challenge Series at Daytona International Speedway in thrilling fashion.

Teenager Luca Mars drove from the back of the 20-car GSX field to win on the car’s global competition debut.

Fresh from his success at Mount Panorama Miedecke believes he is in strong form ahead of the GT4 Mustang debut.

“I haven’t stopped grinning since we confirmed this program” he said.

“I love racing V8s and as Dealer Principal of our successful Ford dealership this makes so much sense.

Coming off winning the Bathurst 6 Hour I feel like I am driving as well as I have in a long time, and to be paired with Rylan is exciting.”

Seventeen year old Gray already has a small taste of GT4 but is full of excitement for the new challenge this weekend.

“When the opportunity came up I grabbed it with both hands!” The Tickford Super2 racer said.

“We’ve been friends with the Miedecke family for a long time and we all get along so well. Competitive racing in a car as nice as the new Ford GT4 is always helpful for my development and I’m sure it will pay dividends in the Super2 car.

“I’ve previously driven a GT4 at the Nürburgring so I know what I’m in for – and I can’t wait!”
