After sweeping the SpeedSeries at Phillip Island, George Miedecke was not only full of praise about the new Ford Mustang GT4, but also his young co-driver Rylan Gray.

Gray, 17, is part of the Tickford and is representing the team in Super2 this year having enjoyed just the one Super3 round at Adelaide last year.

However, he still showed decent pace on Super2 debut at Bathurst, finishing fourth and sixth to emerge fourth in the standings right behind more experienced teammate Brad Vaughan.

To stay racing sharp during the big breaks between Super2 events, Gray has teamed up with Miedecke to drive the new Mustang in the national GT4 championship.

Gray’s class was evident in qualifying when the teenager set the fastest time in the co-driver qualifying session.

Gray’s 1:34.9560 was in a league of its own, being 1.39s faster than next best Shane Smollen in the Porsche 718 Cayman.

Reflecting on the work of his much younger co-driver, Miedecke could not have been more impressed.

“He is the real deal and is going places,” Miedecke told AUTO ACTION.

“He is so sharp and so current that I learnt a lot from him this weekend, which says a lot because I am quite experienced and have driven a lot of different cars.

“He was amazing in the second stint in race 1 to get us the win. He did a perfect job starting in race 2 and just brought it in excellent condition. The tyres and brakes were great.

“He is certainly someone to watch and driving a lot of cool cars this year which he deserves.

“Rylan will be a great teammate for me for the rest of the year.”

Gray himself thoroughly enjoyed racing the new Mustang GT4.

“I got in and the Mustang GT4 was such a fantastic car to drive straight away, so I was super happy with it,” said the 17-year-old driver.

“In qualifying George did a great job with changing conditions to get fifth, and then I jumped in for the second session and put it on pole so that was cool to get the first global pole for the car.

“To came away with two wins has been an outstanding weekend for George and I, and the whole team.”

Gray’s next Super2 race is at Perth on May 17-19.
