Adelaide Motorsport Festival has released its annual Race to the City short film.

The 2018 edition, which features names including Brabham, Capelli, Martini, McRae, Lowndes and Slade, is a ten-minute film that spans the globe from Italy to Adelaide, with star cars including the LaFerrari, Brabham BT62, Leyton House and Mitsubishi Evo as you’ve never seen them before.

Last year, pedestrians and restaurant diners were stunned when a trio of Formula One cars, an original Holden Dealer Team Torana A9X and a World Superbike Ducati roared through the CBD at 10 o’clock on a Wednesday night. Driving under police escort, the squadron of high-performance machines were the stars of a short film to promote the Festival.

That film went viral, reaching more than 2.5 million people around the globe.

This year, organisers have taken the concept to a new level. Filming began in Italy in May with 1980s Formula One stars Ivan Capelli and Pierluigi Martini. A number of South Australian locations were also chosen for the film, including The Bend Motorsport Park, the Adelaide Hills, and several spots in Adelaide’s western suburbs, including Port Adelaide, Islington rail freight terminal and the South Road Superway.

“The Adelaide Motorsport Festival itself is a huge success because we bring something new to the event every year,” said Tim Possingham, Race to the City film director and event director of the Festival.

“The same can be said for our short film. This will be an annual occurrence and year on year we will attempt to change the film so that it is fresh and new but remains relevant. Our strategy this year was to reach out globally with the film, give it an international flavour and appeal in terms of location and those featured in the film. It’s a hard ask on a shockingly tiny budget but I think we have done well.”

Joining Capelli and Martini on screen are seven-times Bathurst winner Craig Lowndes, British Rally Champion Alister McRae, Le Mans winner and former F1 driver David Brabham, and Supercars driver and two-time World Time Attack Challenge winner Tim Slade.

The star drivers are matched be a selection of star cars, including Formula One cars from Ferrari and Leyton House, the incredible hybrid LaFerrari, Adelaide’s own supercar the Brabham BT62, and a rally-prepped Mitsubishi Evo.

The stars and cars are joined by mountain bikers, jet-skiers and even some wine tasting riverboat passengers as they race to the city to get to the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. More than simply an advertisement for the festival, Race to the City 2018 is a brilliant showcase of South Australia as a tourism destination and an entertaining film in its own right.

“We are privileged to have the support of the South Australian Tourism Commission and proud of the economic benefit that the festival brings to South Australia,” Possingham continued.

“We had a heap of fun integrating the mountain bikes and jet-skis into the film. The fact that these activities are in such close proximity to a capital city makes our state such a superb place to live.”
