Gray takes key Super2 success

Rylan Gray leads Super2 field

By Thomas Miles

Rylan Gray has put himself in the box seat to become a Super2 champion after winning the Bathurst finale.

A lightning start vaulted Nash Morris into the lead, but he threw it away at The Chase, opening the door for Gray.

Once in front, he never let it go and his 1.3s win was a hammer blow in the title race as he has almost a full race win in hand.

With Lochie Dalton only managing third in yet another all Tickford podium, Gray enjoys a 147-point advantage heading into the Adelaide finale.

After a few quiet races, the drama returned to Super2.

When the lights went out, Morris produced a start for the ages.

He nailed the launch from third and threaded the needle between his front-row starting teammates to snare the lead.

Vaughan held firm from fourth as Bates locked up as chaos unfolded behind at Hell Corner.

The corner exit proved to be a pinch point as seven cars were involved in a tangle.

Walls slid in front of Sweeny and Gills, forcing all three into the sand.

Meanwhile, on the inside, Burcher, Hughes, Hobson and Geoghegan came to blows, taking avoiding action.

The contact sent Geoghegan airborne briefly as the Safety Car was recalled.

Hughes, Burcher, Walls and Gillis were the unlucky ones who were ruled out on the spot.

Racing resumed with only 20 minutes left on the clock and Morris appeared in control.

However, he threw the lead away by running wide at The Chase and Gray accepted the open invitation with glee.

After five laps, he had pulled more than a second clear of Morris.

Despite the drama, the top two sped away from Dalton, while Vaughan had his work cut out keeping Goodall and Stewart behind.

The likes of Logan and Bates made it a five-car train and the WAU driver applied the pressure to snare sixth from Stewart.

After a few looks, Goodall started to run out of patience by Lap 8 and gave Vaughan a rub through The Chase and they were lucky to hold position.

Just behind them, veteran Webb and youngster McLeod were having a good tussle going side by side through both Griffin’s Bend and The Chase, with the Kelly Racing driver winning after hanging tough on the outside.

Goodall kept hammering the rear of Vaughan all the way to the finish, but could not get by.

But there were no dramas for Gray as he controlled the race from start to finish in an important drive for his title hopes.

He won by 1.3s with Dalton a distant 7s adrift, while a similar gap followed to the battling Vaughan and Goodall.

The Super2 season finishes on the streets of Adelaide on November 27-30.
