Mostert delivers pre qualifying punch

Chaz Mostert at Bathurst

By Thomas Miles

The stage is set for a thrilling Qualifying after Chaz Mostert claimed an ultra-competitive Practice 4 at Bathurst.

In an hour-long session that went down to the wire, Mostert nailed his final lap to post a scorching 2:04.6591.

This edged out Nick Percat by 0.0754s, who also left it late to topple long-time leader Brodie Kostecki.

James Golding recovered from a graze with the Griffin’s Bend barrier as just three-tenths covered the entire top 10.

The clean, sunny and fast session sets the scene for a riveting qualifying this afternoon to make the Shootout.

The full field hit the track with only Kostecki going straight into the 2m05s bracket.

It was a feat no one could match for the first 15 minutes as his 2:05.7535 was three tenths clear of Hill, who was closely followed by Payne.

Lowndes was the only car to depart the track early on, having another small off at The Chase.

Kostecki stayed in P1 for a quarter of an hour until Percat put the foot down and found a further tenth on fresh tyres.

His teammate Hill was also showing speed and made it an MSR one-two, having fallen 0.058s short.

However, these times were nothing compared to what Kostecki had up his sleeve on his second push run.

The DJR driver was back on fresh tyres and nailed three purple sectors to produce a 2:05.1525.

Another Ford driver who impressed at the halfway mark was rookie Camaro, who put the #3 CoolDrive Mustang up to second.

Unfortunately, PremiAir’s plans on the #31 were ruined by one small mistake at Griffin’s Bend.

Golding carried too much speed on the corner exit and bounced over the kerb and into the outside concrete wall.

The impact was hard enough to send the #31 airborne momentarily, but Golding was lucky to get back on track within 10 minutes from entering the garage.

Not only was the car straight, but it was also fast as he slotted in fourth.

The likes of Bates and Stanaway both locked up and fired off Murray’s Corner.

Murray also made a move back into the top three, but the Team 18 Camaro was on song again.

De Pasquale was flying as he produced the first “four” to put a tenth on the field at the 39 minute mark.

This proved to be a taste of what was to come as teams loaded up pre-qualifying runs for the final 10 minutes and Hill was the first to go, shooting to second.

Mostert was the first to join De Pasquale in the 2m04s club, lowering the benchmark by 0.040s.

Bates also did a brilliant job to get into the fours and put the Wildcard up to third as Cameron climbed back into the top five briefly.

However, Kostecki found an extra 0.172s with rapid first and third sectors to be the benchmark and appeared the man to beat as many tried and failed to knock him off.

Murray looked dangerous, recording a purple first sector, only to cut the Esses chicane.

Hill, Waters, Reynolds, Allen and Feeney all fired shots, but fell just short.

However, Kostecki suddenly found himself falling to third as Mostert and Percat nailed their final laps.

Mostert blitzed the second and third sectors to set a scorching 2:04.6591 and take the session.

Determined to prove MSR is still a contender, Percat followed him and fell 0.0754s short to settle into second.

With so many names and teams having a say amid the fine margins, this afternoon’s qualifying at 16.10 AEDT will be tasty.
