Pye dominates wet Practice

Scott Pye tops practice 2

By Thomas Miles

Before the rain arrived, Scott Pye dominated the second Supercars practice at Mount Panorama.

From the moment Practice 2 started, Pye led the way and kept lowering the benchmark until he recorded a 2:06.8395.

In the #1 Triple Eight Camaro, he emerged 0.146s clear of David Russell, who was the only other driver to record a 2m06s time.

Tony D’Alberto was the leading Mustang in the “sevens” ahead of Jayden Ojeda and Lee Holdsworth.

These times all arrived in the first half of the session before persistent showers ensured there were no more times that would challenge the top.

The dry running was also disrupted by a red flag caused by Great Race rookie Harri Jones, who whacked the wall coming out of The Chase.

The only car that did not record a lap was the #3 Mustang of Zak Best, who stayed in the garage throughout.

Practice 2 began on a drying track, but with wet patches still there to catch people out.

In the short eight-minute window before the first red flag, one driver was a cut above the rest.

Pye was the pacesetter throughout, being the first into the 2m09s, 2m08s and 2m07s thresholds.

Initially, right behind him was rookie Bates, who sat a meagre 0.058s away.

But as Pye improved, so did the DJR teammates Hazlewood and D’Alberto, who emerged best of the rest, three tenths adrift.

McLeod had a wild moment at McPhillamy, finding a wet patch and skating through the gravel.

Incredibly, he was able to escape without significant damage despite finding the tyres.

But the reds arrived just a minute later when rookie Jones was not so lucky and got caught out of the Chase.

The Team 18 driver got crossed up on the wet inside kerb going through the flowing right-hander, and the moment sent him hard into the outside concrete wall.

After a lengthy break, the session resumed with 49 minutes left, and D’Alberto became the first driver to knock off Pye.

He stole the lead by finding an extra 0.063s, while Ojeda put the #2 Mustang back into the top three.

Russell also found some speed, putting PremiAir as high as second, just a tenth away from the lead.

By the 21-minute mark, Pye was back in charge, scorching into the 2m06s window.

These laps were well timed as the rain returned and washed away the dry line.

Within minutes, all cars drove into the safety of the lane aside from Morris, who got some practice in the wet.

He was soon joined by teammate Russell, plus veterans Tander and Whincup to give fans some entertainment.

It was not for another 20 minutes until a dry line re-emerged, albeit at the bottom of the mountain, with the top still wet.

Conditions only deteriorated as the session went on, but drivers still pushed to the end to find the limit in the rain.

The top times in the conditions hovered around the 2m26s window at the death.

Thankfully, no one found trouble, but Vaughan nearly did, using his speedway skills to somehow catch a wild moment in the run down the Esses.

Supercars return with an all-driver session at 10.05 AEDT Friday morning where sunnier skies are forecast.
