Casey to race following remarkable rebuild

Dave Woods ute after roll over

By Thomas Miles

Less than six hours after a horrific barrel roll, Dave Casey will be back racing in his Triton in this afternoon’s V8 SuperUte Series race.

Casey made unfortunate headlines when his #782 Mitsubishi Triton took a tumble at Murray’s Corner.

Sitting 11th, the Queenslander received a tap from Luke Webber going over the crest approaching the final turn, which sent him spearing to the infield.

Once Casey hit the sand, he was sent into a flip and went over twice before landing upright on the inside of the track.

Although Casey walked away, the prospect of him racing again this weekend appeared unlikely.

However, a mighty rebuild effort has ensured he will remarkably line up on the grid for the third race at 14.25 AEDT.

“I am all good. Just a bit upset about the damage of the car and the cost because it was not really our fault,” Casey, who entered the weekend sixth in the standings, told Auto Action.

“The main thing is I am okay and we are going to get back out there for the next race.

“It is disappointing for our car and championship, but we will push on.

“There were a few steering arms broken, linkage in the rear, plus cosmetic panel damage.

“Now we are just trying to make sure the doors close properly.

“It is down to the amazing team at Townsville Services and all of the boys at Sieders Racing.

“When something happens, they get together like an army and chip in.”

Reflecting on the accident itself, Casey felt he was “just a passenger” and believes pre-event adjustments to the Triton did not help his cause.

“I was just a passenger,” he said.

“I was worried about going onto the track again, which would escalate the damage again.

“I just wanted to stop as quickly as I could, and as soon as I hit the sand, it pitched in.

“That’s racing and anything can happen, especially at the mountain.

“But the incident came about from the parity adjustments to the Triton I think.

“We have significantly less throttle than all of the other cars which makes us vulnerable at the Chase and Murray’s Corner.

“All the Tritons are way down in the speed traps.”
