The opening Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia GR Cup race at Mount Panorama was abandoned on Friday after a multi-car crash less than 30 seconds into the event at Hell Corner.

Ninth-place qualifier Brock Stinson spun on the exit of Turn 1 and was left stranded in the middle of Mountain Straight. Clay Richards had nowhere to go and hit Stinson’s car before Harrison Blanchard struck the rear of Richards’s car, compounding the impact. Several other cars were caught in the chain reaction, with at least five left stopped at various points and more returning to pit lane with damage.

Race Control immediately red-flagged the race and confirmed it would not be restarted. Medical crews attended the scene; Richards was stretchered to an ambulance and transported by road to Orange Hospital. He was conscious and communicating and was described as in a stable condition for observation.

The incident triggered a short delay to Supercars’ on-track program while recoveries and clean-up were completed.

Event organisers will review incident reports and driving standards as part of the routine post-race process. The GR Cup is scheduled to resume with Race 2 on Saturday afternoon, with further updates on competitors’ status to be provided by teams and series officials as required.
