Mostert fears for wet races

Waters and Randle off at turn 1

By Thomas Miles

Chaz Mostert believes the crazy wet conditions seen in Qualifying would be too dangerous for racing this afternoon.

A sudden downpour triggered chaos in Race 24 qualifying as drivers were caught out by the crazy conditions.

The Tickford teammates followed each other off at Turn 1, replicating scenes of McLaren at this year’s Australian Grand Prix or Ferrari in Malaysia 2001.

The likes of Mostert and Will Brown also struggled to stay on track despite being on full wets.

Queensland Raceway has not seen a weather-affected race since the 2002 Queensland 500, which took place a year after Steven Johnson and Paul Radisich were crowned winners, being stuck in the gravel after spearing off following a late downpour.

Mostert, an experienced driver with 12 years of full-time racing under his belt, believes the conditions seen in qualifying were a bridge too far for racing.

“That was pretty bizarre,” he said.

“There is like a lot of sealant on this track. I think they do a lot of drag racing here, and it was like that time in New Zealand at Pukekohe when the car is trying to put you in the fence left, right and centre.

“Hopefully, the rain eases off so we can race today because I would not like to race in those conditions.

“Nothing you can do aside from keep it off the fence, which I had to do three or four times, unfortunately.”

Poleman Broc Feeney managed to get the top time on slicks, but noted it was far from easy.

“When we went on wets I was literally 30 per cent throttle spinning out on the straight so it was pretty dangerous,” he said.

“It is pretty scary because you see everyone brake and wondered where do I go?

“I was able to brake a bit later and make up some time.

“I am looking forward to a wet race, but it is a shame for all of these fans.”

Two races are scheduled this afternoon, while the Toyotas just completed an interrupted race after qualifying.

The Bureau of Meteorology suggests there is a 20 per cent chance of rain from 13.00-16.00.
