Mostert dedicates stunning drive to Tim Miles

Chaz Mostert stole the show in Race 21, charging from 18th to second, and he dedicated the comeback to former GT rival Tim Miles.
Just six days ago, experienced driver, former team owner and motorsport figure Miles tragically passed away in Sydney after a cycling accident aged 58.
The entire Supercars and Porsche Sprint Challenge field are running special stickers to remember the popular Kiwi, whilst a minute’s silence took place on the grid pre-race.
Mostert raced against Miles last year in the GT World Challenge Australia and admitted his former rival was at the front of his mind as he put in a stunning display around the Reid Park street circuit.
Despite starting 18th Mostert was unstoppable, flying to the top five in just 19 laps, having avoided all the early race drama.
The #25 kept charging up the field and rose to third by the time the second set of stops rolled around, and despite needing anti-stall to get going, he still picked off Matt Payne to complete a special drive to second.
Mostert dedicated the drive to Miles.
“I channelled my inner Tim Miles. A shout out to his family after what they have gone through the last week, it has rocked the whole paddock,” he said.
“I knew Tim from GTs, and he was a gentleman behind the scenes and a larger than life personality.
“There were a few tears for a few guys at the start of that race.
“When I was getting going and making a few moves, I thought ‘Tim drives aggressively’ so let’s get in there and have a crack.”
After struggling in qualifying, Mostert admitted he did not think a podium was possible and revealed the pre-race tweaks turned his Mustang into one of his favourites.
“After starting 18th I would not have believed we could finish second after the weekend we have had,” he said.
“It is right up there. We have not felt competitive all weekend, but that car was probably one of my most special cars in the Gen3 era.
“It is a credit to Sam (Scaffidi) and the whole WAU team. It was a completely different car to the whole weekend.
“We had struggled with drive and could not feel the rear, but the car was super sharp then and had great drive.
“A bit bummed I ran out of power steering with around 20 to go, so I was just trying to hang on, but I had to work for every position to get there.”
In addition to a slightly slow pit stop during his final visit to the lane, an unexpected steering drama made the journey home very difficult for Mostert.
“I tried to be super aggressive and a bit different to try and get less wheel spin, but the anti-stall fired up quickly and we got it going,” he said of the stop.
“Something (power steering) tweaked on the start when I went over the Turn 2 kerb, and cars were going everywhere.
“It was heavy from there, and it started to get heavier and gradually worse in the last 20 laps.
“When the steering goes, you just get this pulsating amount of pressure, and you need that feedback to be consistent, so you don’t know if you have understeer or oversteer.
“Glad it was not a 250km race because that would have been very hard.”
