Norris ‘misjudged’ Piastri move

Norris out of Canadian GP

By Thomas Miles

Lando Norris has admitted he “misjudged” the move on Oscar Piastri that took him out of the Canadian Grand Prix as the McLarens repeated history.

For the first time in 2025, the title-contending McLarens raced wheel to wheel for fourth in the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, won by George Russell.

After reeling in the Australian, Norris launched an attack at the hairpin, but did not make it stick and also could not keep up with Piastri during a DRS duel down the following straight.

This left Norris in the slipstream going down the pit straight, and he tried to line up a move on the inside, but the gap was not there, and the #4 went straight into the back of the #81.

The end result was a disaster for Norris as he not only lost his front wing, but also hit the inside wall hard and into retirement.

With Piastri surviving and holding onto fourth, it has also left a significant blow on the championship standings with the Aussie growing his advantage to a season-high 22 points.

Unlike the eighties when McLarens clashed, the 2025 teammates have handled the situation well.

Not only did Norris take the blame instantly over the radio, he also apologised to Piastri as soon as he saw the Australian in the interview pen.

During these interviews, Norris remained honest.

“I just thought Oscar could move a bit more to the right, not to leave a gap, obviously, I don’t expect something to be easy from him, but I just misjudged it,” he said.

“It was all my mistake. I take full blame, so I apologise to the whole team and to Oscar for attempting something like that.

“There’s going for it, like in hairpin, you know, a good, fair move, and there’s being stupid, like I was at the end.”

Piastri did not have much to say on the clash, but was pleased “good guy” Norris apologised.

“I honestly haven’t seen what happened,” he said.

“I obviously felt a bit of a touch, but yeah, it’s an unusual place to have an incident. So, I still need to have a look.

“Lando’s apologised to me, so I guess that says a little bit, but I honestly haven’t seen much.

“I think Lando is a very good guy and I think it’s in his character and in his personality to say exactly what he thinks.

“And if that’s detrimental to himself, or if it’s about himself, then it doesn’t matter for him and I think that’s a great quality of Lando. I think it is a good quality.

“I think it’s good for the whole team going forward that we can have these conversations and go racing like this and have things not go the way we want and get through them.”
