Garwood bringing the #1 back to TCM

Garwood with champions check

By Thomas Miles

Tassie driver Adam Garwood has picked the perfect occasion to bring the #1 back to Touring Car Masters, Symmons Plains.

Reigning champion Garwood will return to Touring Car Masters on home soil when the popular category follows the Supercars to the Tasmania Super440 next weekend.

However, he will not be driving the VB Commodore that pushed him to the title last year as its currently raced by Duggan Family Hotels’ Jude Bargwanna.

Instead, Garwood will be cheered by the home crowd driving a modified Ford Capri V8.

It is the same car his father, Greg, has raced in the Invitational TCM class in the past, but lots of work has been done by Gerard McLeod at Maverick Performance.

Garwood will race with the #1 and has intentions on doing multiple rounds in 2025 with Darwin and The Bend targeted.

But fittingly the first drive as a reigning champion will be on home turf at Symmons Plains.

“It is pretty exciting,” Garwood told Auto Action.

“We have had the Capri in the family for a few years now and it has always ran as an invitational car, but Gerard McLeod of Maverick Performance has put a fair bit of work to get it align with the rules and hopefully we can fight for some race wins at Symmons Plains.

“We had to do some bodywork changes and also to the shock absorbers and gearbox. Not huge things, but it just transforms it from a tarmac rally car to a proper circuit car.

“My father ran it mostly in TCM in the Invitational class and I have just done some local stuff at Symmons and Baskerville, but not for a couple of years.

“It is pretty similar (to the VB Commodore) in wheelbase and track width, but its different being a rally car.

“Has a Ford engine compared to the LS which is quite different in the characteristics.

“We are sort of going in blind and it will be a bit of a challenge, but it should not take too long to get our heads around it.

“Looking forward to racing hard.”

Garwood missed the opening TCM round at SMP as he has been focusing on his transition to Trans Am.
