Rain washes Supercars finale away

Percat

By Thomas Miles

Will Brown has become the first driver to win a second Larry Perkins Trophy after the fourth and final Melbourne SuperSprint race was washed out.

Following constant rain throughout Sunday morning, the field headed by pole sitter Broc Feeney started behind the Safety Car and only got through two completed laps before the red flag was waved with conditions worsening.

On the third tour all 24 cars went to the lane as the race was suspended.

With only a small on-track window available before the Formula 2 Feature Race at 11.30 and the rain not disappearing, there was not enough time for any hope of staging a race.

The race was called after just 7m43s at 10.39 local time.

No points were awarded given not a single racing lap was possible.

The last abandoned Supercars race was Race 30 of the 2021 season, the last leg of the Sydney Motorsport Park quadruple header.

This ensured Brown retained not only the Larry Perkins Trophy, but also the championship lead.

His win on Saturday night saw the reigning champion snatch the lead from Cameron Waters and only seven points split them ahead of the Taupo Super400.

Having won it last year, Brown also held onto the Larry Perkins Trophy by 10 points over Feeney and Cameron Hill, who shared a win each across an enthralling weekend.

The Triple Eight driver is the first person to win it for a second time after Jamie Whincup (2018) Chaz Mostert (2019) and Shane van Gisbergen (2022).

The cancellation is a disappointing end to what had been an action packed Melbourne SuperSprint.

Perhaps the ducks did have the last laugh after all.

Fingers crossed the Australian Grand Prix at 15.00 AEDT is not impacted in the same way.
