Feeney sweeps Albert Park poles

Broc Feeney is flying around Albert Park and has sealed pole for both of the opening two races of the Melbourne SuperSprint.

After just beating his teammate Will Brown to take pole for this evening’s opener with a 1:47.7192, Feeney did it again and went even faster to secure the position for Friday’s sprint.

His 1:47.1719 was two tenths clear of Cameron Hill, who was equally as impressive.

The Matt Stone Racing driver secured his two career best starting positions of third and second to put the #4 on the front row for the first time.

Only 23 cars were on show for the back to back 15-minute sessions with James Courtney swapping the steering wheel for a microphone due to his #7 BRT Mustang still being repaired from the heavy practice crash.

There were plenty of talking points from Race 4 Qualifying alone.

As Triple Eight locked out the front row with Feeney leading the way, Cameron Hill came within 0.03s of an unlikely maiden pole, while Brodie Kostecki salvaged fifth despite getting stuck in the gravel.

The big shock surrounded Tickford with Cameron Waters forced to somehow keep his winning streak alive from 22nd on the grid.

Waters was much faster in the second session and secured sixth as the leading Mustang as the Triple Eight and MSR Camaros proved tough to stop.

R4 Qualifying

After practice took place under overcast skies, all the clouds had disappeared for qualifying, creating a much hotter track surface.

The times were tight straight away with just half a tenth separating Payne and Feeney at the top of the leaderboard.

Payne emerged clear just with a 1:48.0095, while the Erebus teammates of Le Brocq and Murray were next best.

Mostert won a tight battle for fifth as just three tenths covered positions five to 13.

Everyone aside from the Matt Stone Racing teammates managed to record a flying lap before an early red flag arrived.

The stoppage was caused by Kostecki, who sat sixth, but got beached at Turn 1.

Following his flying lap the DJR driver locked up and could not get out of the sand trap.

Due to creating the interruption, Kostecki lost his time and fell to 21st.

The session went green with just 3m40s left on the clock creating a tight and tense period for the field, especially Hill and Percat, who were yet to post a time.

The entire field aside from leader Payne left the lane to chase a late gain in what effectively became a one-lap shootout.

Brown looked dangerous going purple in both of the first two sectors, but he was trumped by teammate Feeney by a slender 0.0166s after an impressive final sector.

Hill also impressed, shooting up to third and coming within 0.03s of a maiden and unlikely pole.

Both Le Brocq and Kostecki were the only other drivers to beat Payne’s benchmark with the DJR driver saving his session from the early disaster.

All of the last-lap improvements saw Payne fall from first to sixth as Grove Racing opted to save rubber over track position.

Cameron had his first major scare as a solo driver, whacking the wall at the fast Turn 8, but carried on.

It was a session to forget for Tickford with neither Randle or Waters showing any speed and recording only 21st and 22nd respectively with the championship leader forced to lament a small mistake and tapping the wall at Turn 8.

R5 Qualifying 

The Camaros came charging with Percat leading the cavalry.

Percat’s 1:47.6449 was just enough to take an early lead with Le Brocq (+0.0209) and Feeney (0.0888) denied.

Heimgartner and Hill also showed early speed to make it an all Chevrolet top five that was split by just over a tenth with Kostecki waving the flag for Ford.

Turn 8 remained a hot spot with both WAU teammates finding the fence and Mostert especially skating across the grass.

As a result Mostert was one of four drivers not to post an early lap with Payne, Evans and Davison.

They and the entire field waited until the final three minutes to go back out and have one last bite at the cherry.

Determined to respond after the Race 4 disappointment, Waters was on it and went purple in the second sector straight away.

He carried on for the remainder of the lap and went to the top, displacing Percat by a tenth.

However, Brown found more time and denied the Tickford driver by a meagre 0.04s.

But just a heartbeat later the #1 slipped from P1 to P5.

Not only had Feeney again went fastest, Hill, Percat and Heimgartner all squeezed their way in between the Triple Eight teammates.

Whilst the #88’s impressive 1:47.1719 created a comfortable two-tenth advantage, there was nothing in it in the minors.

Just half a tenth covered Hill, Percat, Heimgartner and Brown, while Waters slotted into sixth.

Mostert waited until his final lap to set a flyer, but could only manage 15th.

Davison was restricted 23rd after being the latest to experience a wild moment at Turn 8.

The stage is set for both 19-lap sprints to start the weekend.
