The task for Will Brown in Sunday’s finale of the Melbourne SuperSprint just got tougher after receiving a penalty for blocking.
Brown impeded Chaz Mostert’s final lap of Race 7 Qualifying and received a three-place grid penalty.
As a result, the reigning champion will start the 14-lap dash from 21st on the grid.
Both Brown and Mostert struggled throughout the final eight-minute qualifying session that set the grid for Sunday’s Race 7.
The pair found themselves on the same piece of tarmac at the very end of the session and it proved extremely costly for the WAU driver.
With Mostert last, he started a third flying lap just before the chequered flag was waved, but his attempt of finding any more speed was denied by Turn 7.
This is where he had to back out due to a slow-moving Brown on the racing line coming out of the short left hander.
Not only was Mostert forced to back out of his lap, but he also made contact with the #1 Camaro.
It was extremely costly for Mostert, who will start the final race of the weekend from last on the grid.
The WAU driver was not too devastated however, understanding Brown was not aware.
“The first run I was pretty happy with and then I saw the pole time of 1m46.1s and that put a bit more pressure on in Q2,” Mostert said.
“I tried to find a bit more time and I stuffed those first two laps on the green tyre and unfortunately had to do a third where I found my old mate Will Brown down there.
“It was not completely Will’s fault. In qualifying we rely a lot on team communication and obviously he had no idea that I was on my lap.
“Usually every time this happens it is ‘I never got told you were on a lap’ so it’s back to the team.”
With Brown and Mostert starting 21st and 24th respectively, all eyes will be on them to see how much ground they can make up in what could be a wet race.
