Matt Stone Racing (MSR) could not have dreamed of a better Friday with the team executing all aspects to ensure Cameron Hill would become a winner.
Hill led home teammate Nick Percat to drive MSR into the history books as it celebrated a maiden 1-2 finish.
A key part of the perfect team performance was an element of team orders.
Stone said he gave his teammates the all clear to race across the first three corners before settling things down and despite a close call at Turn 4, it worked a treat.
“They raced on at the start as you do and Cam did a great move to get the lead and Nick was there to solidify it,” Stone said.
“Once they got to Turn 3 Nick could have very easily had a go and that would have drastically changed things, so he did a brilliant job at tucking in and playing the team game.”
Hill also confirmed the orders, but admitted MSR spent more time pondering how it would attack the lead rather than defend it.
“We discussed a lot of hypothetical situations before the race and there were more scenarios as us being the second or third cars but we did briefly touch on if we were leading and it went perfectly to plan,” he said.
Percat, who won here last year, was more than happy to play the team game.
“If I was in 2014 I would have gone for the win, but I had a good honest discussion before the race.
“For me it was whoever was leading out of turn 4 and we had a little bit of overlap going into 5 but that would have caused an absolute drama and slowed both of us down.
“Even if I got the move done it would have jeopardised the position on track.
“We kept it clean and we had really good car speed.
“We were a little bit different in set up so I was a bit stronger in the middle part of the lap and Cam was faster at the start and that made it easier to defend Will.
“But as Cam said it was more about what happened if we were second and third and it was a very quick conversation about leading.
“It was always about getting maximum team points and it is just amazing to deliver a one-two.”
Team orders or not, Hill still executed the race perfectly and will forever be known as a Supercars race winner.
