Doohan announces F1 number

By Thomas Miles

Australia’s newest Formula 1 driver, Jack Doohan, will race with the #7 on his Alpine during his rookie season in 2025.

Doohan revealed the new number on Alpine’s social media during the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.

The Aussie had to reselect his career number after his original selection of #12 had been taken by Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

It is an interesting change considering Doohan has used the #61 in each testing and practice F1 appearance he has made.

The number has previous history with the son of five time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan.

Doohan raced with the #7 in the 2019 Euroformula Open Championship when he scored two podiums on his way to 11th in the standings.

The #7 is a famous one considering fan favourite and 2007 F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen used it across the final eight seasons of his career.

Due to the rule where a number only becomes available until two years after a driver has left, the #7 only became available this year.

This means Doohan is just the second driver to use the #7 since personalised numbers were introduced and switched from constructors order in 2014.

Doohan will race with the #7 for his entire F1 career and joins fellow Australian Oscar Piastri, who steers the #81.

Doohan’s Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly races with the #10.

“Number seven will be my race number for 2025. Super psyched,” Doohan said.

“I really wanted to go with a number that I raced with before and something that had meaning for me. I raced with number seven in 2019.

“And also one of my idols, a super special person and driver, Kimi Raikkonen, also drove with that number.

“I’m really looking forward to continuing it on and making it my own and getting some luck from number seven.”
