Feeney takes pole with statement Shootout lap

By Thomas Miles

Broc Feeney has fired his latest statement, by producing a scorching lap and taking a maiden VAILO Adelaide 500 pole by a tenth.

On a high from his Saturday win, Feeney was the only driver to produce a 1m19s lap in an intense Shootout where he knocked off the fast Fords of Chaz Mostert and Thomas Randle.

It was not a straightforward Shootout with sunlight bathing the track and catching out even the likes of Cameron Waters.

Feeney is now in the best position to be the first driver since Scott McLaughlin 2019 to go back to back on the streets of Adelaide.

Here is how the Shootout played out…

P6 Anton De Pasquale 1:20.5554 +0.5833

In his last day with DJR, De Pasquale was the first in the shootout and produced a clean opening sector.

Stayed out of trouble and did not have any major moments for the remainder of the lap to open the session with a 1:20.5554.

“Pretty hard to get these tyres in. I don’t think it is great, but you never know. I can’t imagine looking at pole,” he said.

P9 NIck Percat 1:20.6940 +0.7219

Percat was on four green tyres and went hard over the Senna Chicane and was hard on the rev limiter through the “Staircase.”

He was a tenth down on the first split, but fired back in the second sector to be 0.021s up.

However, he could not stay ahead in the final sector and ended up a tenth adrift after running wide at Turn 9.

“First lap on lap one so probably did not get a enough temp. Bottom went pretty loose at turn 8 and went wide at 9. Had a send,” Percat said.

P5 Brodie Kostecki 1:20.2922 +0.3201

In his last shootout for Erebus and with the #1 on the door, Kostecki used the kerbs through the opening sector and effectively matched De Pasquale.

Gained slightly more time on the DJR driver through the mid part of the lap, but had a little moment running slightly wide at the final corner.

However, this did not stop Kostecki from still being well clear ahead of De Pasquale.

“Probably not,” Kostecki said when asked if his lap will stay at the top.

“Track is pretty crap at the moment with the category that was on before which does not work too well with the tyre.”

P8 Will Davison 1:20.6142 +0.6421

Davison is no stranger to an Adelaide Shootout and used roaded front tyres and green rears.

Was a tenth away from Kostecki at the first split, but held the margin through the second sector.

But could not maintain the pace through the final sector and ended up three tenths off the pace.

“No I am not. It was not bad but its tricky with the opening lap trying to read the grip. Nothing majorly wrong,” Davison said.

P3 Thomas Randle 1:20.1868 +0.2147

After just missing out on pole Randle was determined to go one better on Sunday with four fresh tyres.

Rocketed through the “Staircase” to emerge 0.077s clear of Kostecki at the first split.

He gave it everything through Turn 8 and used all the road and the commitment paid off.

Randle went to the top by 0.1054s ahead of Kostecki.

“Track is speedy for the time of day. We will see where the Castrol car ends up,” Randle said.

P4 Will Brown 1:20.2435 +0.2714

In his first Shootout as a champion, Brown and flew over the Senna Chicane, getting a big chunk of the Turn 2 kerb.

The bounce saw him be 0.045s off, however, he flew down the straights to set a purple second sector where the overall difference was just 0.005s

Pushed hard, but fell just 0.0567s short of Randle after making a small mistake at the final corner.

“I had a big of a go out there and stuffed up the last corner, not getting the drive out of there,” Randle said.

P2 Chaz Mostert 1:20.1260 +0.1539

Mostert flew in the first sector and went purple. Despite not doing the same in the second split, he stayed ahead of Randle’s marker.

Perfected the exits of turns 6, 8 and 11 to fly to the top of the charts by 0.061s.

“It has been a while since I have maintained position in a top 10. Credit to the guys, the car was pretty good,” Mostert said.

P7 Ryan Wood 1:20.5912 +0.6191

Rookie Wood started his maiden Shootout with four roaded tyres and was a tenth off first split.

Kept it clean and ran close coming out of Turn 12, but ended up four tenths off his teammate.

“It was awesome fun and great to make the shootout. Didn’t quite put it together but stoked to not get a kerb hop,” Wood said.

P10 Cameron Waters 1:22.0976 +2.1255

Chasing back to back poles, Waters was on the ragged edge.

His lap started to derail when he had a huge lock up at turn 4 and missed the apex by a car length.

Things took a turn for the worst in between the double right hander at the top of the staircase, where he then whacked the concrete on approach to turn 7.

This saw him lose the best part of 2s but completed the lap.

“That was not nice. I locked a front into four and then went into five with understeer and a flat spot so it was nasty,” Waters said.

P1 Broc Feeney 1:19.9721

Feeney flew out of the blocks and was up a tenth on the first split and kept on pushing. He was purple in all three sectors and nailed the tricky turns 8 and 11 to fly into the 1m19s

“It has been a while. Last one for the year and I just laid it all down,” Feeney said.
