Kostecki to take return ‘round by round’

By Thomas Miles

Brodie Kostecki is not getting ahead of himself and will take his Supercars title defence “round by round” as he prepares for his return at Taupo.

After missing the first two rounds, Kostecki is back in the #1 Erebus Motorsport Camaro and is about to roll out in his first Supercars session in New Zealand.

To prepare for the comeback, the reigning champion completed “200-250km” during his first drive in the revised Gen3 Camaro at a Winton test last week.

As he prepares for his first Supercars session at Taupo, Kostecki said he is taking one step at a time with a “few big trophies” still to chase.

“I just want to thank everyone for all their support and it is great to be back,” he told Mark Larkham on Fox Sports.

“It is one of those things you have to take round by round.

“I am only focusing on today and you cannot skip today to get to tomorrow. We will take it step by step.

“I am confident in the team around me. They always do a really good job here.

“We will take it round by round because there are a lot of trophies we still want to get and a few big races I would like to tick off and just go from there.”

Reflecting on his first laps of the new Gen3 Camaro, Kostecki is confident he has a good understanding of the off-season changes despite starting Taupo from the back foot.

“There is always a bit of rust but after the second or third lap you find your feet again and felt comfortable with the car,” he said.

“We did a pretty big test plan and got through a lot of stuff we wanted to try.

“The setup philosophy always changes when there is an aero tweak but I got quickly accustomed to that and I believe we have a handle on it.

“We will see how we go.”

The sole practice session at Taupo is about to begin.

Podcast: We’re going to Taupo… Tow Paw… Whatever. Supercars is back!

After a break that feels like months, the Supercars Championship is back and headed across the ditch to Taupo in the middle of the North Island. And yes, Brodie Kostecki will be there! As will the rain.

Somehow, the rain will also be in China for F1’s return to 中国. Philip Island was stunning on the weekend, just gone, if a little cold, but we chatted about whether Supercars should return to the land of penguins.

Plus, there’s more… all the news in the way only the Auto Action RevLimiter can deliver.
