Tarmac West to return

By Mark Bisset

Entries are open for the four-day endurance Tarmac West rally to be held in and around Perth this September.

New for 2024 is a Time Speed Distance category which anyone can enter in a standard car and helmet; all that is needed is a AASA General Speed License.

TSD competitors are required to complete each stage as close to possible to the time allowed and will be penalised for an early finish, more so than a late one. Rally drivers will race the clock on 251 km of closed roads.

A Ceremonial Start in Perth’s CBD commences proceedings before heading to the competitive stages in Whiteman Park and then the twilight stages on Ellenbrook’s closed roads.

On day two, Friday 13th, competitors will race the clock around Parkerville and Kalamunda including the famous Zig Zag stage, before returning to Forrest Place for a Show and Shine.

Saturday 14 September marks the long-awaited return of marathon stages in Toodyay, Maryville Downs and Bullsbrook: 120 km of competitive kilometres.

The Sunday action is always a spectator favourite. The action is close to the city with fast and technical stages in Malaga, then the Riverside Drive stage in the city in the afternoon. Langley Park then again host’s WA’s biggest motoring display: the Celebration of Motorsport, Hot Rod Street Machines and Classics on the Swan.

Tarmac Events WA Director Ross Tapper said, “We’re really happy to be back to our original format, and so are the competitors, and we encourage interstate competitors to enter to test their skills against WA’s best.”

Modern or classic cars can enter three categories in Tarmac West: T200 with a maximum speed of 200km/h, T165 – 165km/h and T130 – 130km/h. There are also categories for rookies and a Two Day Rallye for those who commit late.

Last held in this format in 2021, Tarmac West, was put on hold while Motorsport Australia investigated fatal incidents at other tarmac rallies in the Eastern States.

For the past three years, a series of short and fast Rallysprint events have instead been held in WA. Last year, Tarmac Events Pty Ltd was formed, and successfully ran Tarmac West with AASA as the sanctioning body. The safe running of 15 Tarmac rallies has enabled the return of the traditional long form Tarmac West.

For spectators, Tarmac West is free with dedicated spectator points to safely watch the action.
