Waters: Supercars ‘still my focus’

Although Cam Waters is busy preparing for a “dream” NASCAR debut, his major focus remains Supercars as he is determined to “get my championship back on track.”

A fortnight before the Taupo Super400, Waters will be racing a ThorSport Racing Ford around Martinsville Raceway in the NASCAR Truck Series this Saturday.

For the 29-year-old, the drive marks the realisation of a “dream” but he also made it clear he still has lots more to achieve in Supercars.

Waters is one of the biggest stars on the grid in his #6 Monster Mustang having won 11 races including the iconic Sandown and Adelaide 500 events since his debut in 2016.

But having finished second in both the championship and Bathurst 1000 twice without tasting the ultimate success, Waters remains as hungry as ever.

Having endured a nightmare start to the 2024 season, currently sitting 16th, Waters revealed ahead of his NASCAR debut he wants to get his campaign “back on track”.

“I’m going after a championship over there,” Waters said from America.

“This race fit in pretty perfectly between AGP and Taupo.

“I really just need to get through this weekend and see how we go.

“Then go to New Zealand, try and win some races over there to get my Supercar championship back on track.

“What I do in Australia has always been my focus and still is my focus.”

Waters also praised the support of his only full-time Supercars team Tickford to make the trip to America happen.

“I’ve been very lucky with my race team in Australia, Tickford Racing,” he said.

“They’ve allowed me to look outside the square and do a bit more racing on the side.

“They see it as a compliment to my racing in Australia, which has been awesome. “So if I can do something that’s going to complement my racing, they’re all for it.

“It’s awesome to have a team like that behind me.”

Waters has already met the ThorSport team and admitted he was “blown away” by the facilities of the squad with five championship titles.

“We flew into Cleveland and then drove to Sandusky and did a seat fit and met the team. That was amazing,” he said.

“I got blown away by how big ThorSport was and their whole operation.

“I was blown away with how cold it was in Sandusky because we’re coming out of an Australian summer. It was freezing there and then we did a road trip to Charlotte and have been here since Saturday or Sunday.

“I’ve been at the Tech Center and doing a little bit of sim stuff today, so we’re ramping up the efforts for the weekend and trying to learn as much as I can in a short period of time.”

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Martinsville will take place at 10.30 AEDT Saturday, April 6.
