Full-time NASCAR a “dream” for Waters
This weekend Cam Waters will make a one-off NASCAR Truck Series debut at Martinsville, but he admits racing full time in the USA would be “a dream”.
Waters will drive for ThorSport Racing with support from Ford Performance at Martinsville at 10.30 AEDT this Saturday.
The Tickford driver follows in the footsteps of on track rivals throughout his Supercars career such as Marcos Ambrose, Shane van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki, who have all raced NASCAR.
Both van Gisbergen and Ambrose have had experience in the Truck Series with the Kiwi racing at Indianapolis last year finishing 19th, whilst the Aussie did almost a full season in 2006 with a best finish of third.
Both van Gisbergen and Ambrose jumped from Supercars to have a crack at forging a full-time NASCAR career and Waters admitted he would love to do the same one day, but made it clear he still has goals he wants to achieve down under.
“I definitely have a dream to one day get over here and race full-time NASCAR,” Waters said in a press conference in America.
“But to get there it’s such a long journey and I’ve got a pretty cool thing going on in Australia racing Supercars.
“I’ve wanted to do it for years, but what I do in Australia has always been my focus and still is my focus.
“For me to do the odd NASCAR race like we’re doing this weekend is pretty cool, so we’ll go through this weekend and have a bit of fun and work out what NASCAR is all about and see what happens in the future.”
In 2023 Waters watched Kyle Larson lift the Grandfathers Clock at Martinsville from the stands and a year later the Supercars star will be racing on the famous short track himself.
He revealed that holiday was when he started planting the seeds for this weekend.
“I’d say probably 18 months and then, 12 months ago I came to Martinsville and checked out a race,” Waters said.
“That’s the first race I’ve been to and that’s what probably sparked a bit more interest in me to pursue it.
“I’ve just been chipping away in the background over the last 12 months to make something happen like this, so yeah, there has always been a bit of an interest there.”
When asked about the possibility of participating in more NASCAR races in 2024, Waters made it clear Martinsville is his sole focus.
“I think Friday night, if we can keep the truck clean, like I said, and take in as much as I can, I think that’d be good,” he said.
“I’ve kind of got no expectations. I don’t really know how I’m going to go.
“It’s going to be kind of jumping in the deep end, so to speak, with the limited practice and not being able to drive the truck beforehand.
“Right now, this is the only thing we’ve kind of got set in stone. It’s kind of hard with my schedule in Australia.”
