Kostecki pumped with Shootout return

By Thomas Miles

Reigning champion Brodie Kostecki is showing signs of progress and will make a Top 10 Shootout return at Taupo today.

Kostecki had strong speed in the Sunday morning qualifying session in the #1 Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

After being second following the first run, his 1:27.4469 ended up being eighth fastest, enough to secure a Top 10 Shootout berth in his second race back.

It is a big step up from Saturday where Kostecki qualified 15th.

After missing the first two rounds, the #1 driver is pleased to be back near the front.

Kostecki also noted that whilst the track appeared dry, it was far from an easy lap around Taupo.

“It is great to be back in the Shootout,” Kostecki said.

“Felt like I did a pretty good lap in the first run and did not quite maximise my last tyre set so I had to work the tyre a little bit.

“It was very tricky out there and pretty damp off line.

“We have a little bit of work to do in the race and we will see where we stack up in the shootout.”

Kostecki’s first race in the hot seat proved to be a wet and wild affair.

After qualifying 15th, the reigning champion worked his way into the top 10 before getting stuck in the congested pits and dropping to 12th.

Things took a turn for the worse when a bold dive down the inside of David Reynolds did not go to plan and the Erebus Camaro speared into James Courtney, sending the #7 Mustang into a spin.

Kostecki received a 15s penalty for his troubles which saw him fall to as low as 21st before eventually crossing the line in 14th, which became 13th thanks to a penalty for Thomas Randle.

Kostecki put his hand up for the incident as he made “too many errors”.

“It was a pretty interesting race and wild off the start,” he reflected.

“The pit lane is really, really tight here and just got boxed in.

“I got a little bit frustrated and tried to make a move on David and T-boned James so sorry about that.

“The car was really fast in the race but made a few too many errors.”

Kostecki will take on the one-lap dash t 10.25 AEST.

Podcast: We’re going to Taupo… Tow Paw… Whatever. Supercars is back!

After a break that feels like months, the Supercars Championship is back and headed across the ditch to Taupo in the middle of the North Island. And yes, Brodie Kostecki will be there! As will the rain.

Somehow, the rain will also be in China for F1’s return to 中国. Philip Island was stunning on the weekend, just gone, if a little cold, but we chatted about whether Supercars should return to the land of penguins.

Plus, there’s more… all the news in the way only the Auto Action RevLimiter can deliver.
