Brown latest to win Larry Perkins Trophy
Will Brown has become the newest name on the list of winners of the prestigious Larry Perkins Trophy winners at the Australian Grand Prix.
Brown has continued the trend of rotating winners being the fifth driver to win it from five occasions since the trophy was first up for grabs in 2018.
The #87 joins fellow Triple Eight drivers Jamie Whincup (2018) and Shane van Gisbergen (2022) whilst Chaz Mostert and Brodie Kostecki won the 2019 and 2023 rounds respectively.
Consistency was key for Brown, who won just one of the four races in the 2024 Melbourne SuperSprint, but finished second in three other races, including the finale where he charged from ninth on the grid.
Brown collected 287 points across the busy weekend, just eight more than Triple Eight teammate Broc Feeney, who won two races but a mistake at the penultimate corner dropping him to fourth on Friday proved to be decisive.
Brown was honoured to win the Larry Perkins Trophy having raced alongside Jack Perkins three times at Bathurst.
“I was pretty keen to lock this one away, getting the Larry Perkins Trophy means a lot to me,” Brown said.
“I have driven with Jack over of the years so I was excited to win this trophy.
“It was a great weekend but I would love to be first and not second (in Race 6) because I have had three seconds in a row.
“It was fun getting through the pack. I tried as hard as I could to get the win but just didn’t really have the tyres at the end.”
Brown is yet to finish outside the top two so far in 2024 which means he leaves round 2 of the championship as the series leader.
He has collected 575 points out of a possible 620, securing a 17-point lead over Feeney.
“Still scored awesome points and results to continue our strong start to the year,” he said.
“This is how I really wanted to start the year.”
