Feeney sneaks past Waters in final practice
Broc Feeney eclipsed Cameron Waters at the death to finish practice fastest with little separating the leaders at Albert Park.
Waters appeared poised to finish a Supercars session on top, only for Feeney to sneak 0.0026s ahead with his final lap of the session.
Although the #88 is the pacesetter with a 1:47.3057, only 0.1898s separates the top six which features six different teams also filled by Anton De Pasquale, Andre Heimgartner, Chaz Mostert and Matt Payne.
Being the pivotal final session prior to qualifying, teams made the most of the 30 minutes under sunny skies.
After it took 17 minutes to break the 1m47s barrier, drivers were able to achieve the feat instantly.
Both Waters and De Pasquale did it on their first runs with the #6 Tickford entry going fastest with a 1:47.8289 – a tenth clear than car #11.
Six of the top eight cars were Mustangs as the likes of Davison and Feeney stayed in the pits.
On his fourth lap, Feeney joined the 1m47s club by coming just 0.0172s short of the top.
Mostert was also pushing hard and purple first and third sectors propelled him to P1.
The 1:47.4623 was in its own league for the majority of the session, being 0.366s up on next best Waters.
Whilst the pace was hot, some were pushing the boundaries.
Cameron Hill had a massive lockup at the turn 9-10 complex, which saw the #4 skip the right hander, while rookie Aaron Love speared off into the gravel at turn 12.
The biggest scare was actually experienced by Feeney, who kissed the wall at the high speed turn 8 where Shane van Gisbergen had a big spin last year.
When the final five minutes arrived it was go time as the majority of the field conducted qualifying simulation runs on fresh tyres.
Brown was the first to make a move, climbing from 14th to third, while Le Brocq also made a similar gain to get into the top five.
Once again it was the Monster Mustang that had the most pace to burn.
A 1:47.3083 0.15s ahead of Mostert, who lost second to Heimgartner.
But the #25 WAU Mustang was also on a flyer, nailing the first sector but was hurt by the rear tyre grip fading away and could not improve.
At the chequered flag Feeney snatched first by the skin of his teeth, while De Pasquale also shot up to third.
The nail-biting session sets the scene for a double dose of qualifying where the intensity rises at 15.10 AEDT.
