Power “did nothing wrong” in Penske scandal

By Thomas Miles

Australian Team Penske star Will Power has made it clear he was unaware of the push-to-pass manipulations that have led to Team Penske losing its St Petersburg win.

After being found guilty of rules 14.19.15 and 14.19.16 regarding the push-to-pass system, both Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin were disqualified from first and third respectively.

Although Power was not disqualified from finishing fourth, he still lost 10 points and along with his teammates was fined $25,000.

Whilst the Australian has not been accused by IndyCar, he was still punished due to the manipulated systems being found in all three Penske Chevrolets.

The Australian wanted to make it clear he did “nothing wrong.”

“I was disappointed to learn about the penalty that we received this week from IndyCar,” Power wrote on social media.

“There was an oversight by our team and I was unaware of the situation until it was brought to our attention following Long Beach.

“As per the rules, I did not utilize the P2P capabilities during any start or restart during the St. Petersburg race.

“While I accept the penalty, I want it to be known that I did nothing wrong and followed the rules.”

Power has followed in the footsteps of McLaughlin in offering a statement, but Newgarden is yet to join his teammates and say anything public.

IndyCar carries on racing this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.

Brodie Kostecki was back for Erebus, Andre Heimgartner won for Brad Jones Racing, and Will Brown battled his teammate Broc Feeney for the other win. Anton De Pasquale also won the Jason Richards Trophy for the best performer over the two races – is Dick Johnson Racing back?
