BRABHAM CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER OFF TO ADELAIDE

By Thomas Miles

The Sir Jack Brabham legacy will be saluted at the 2023 Adelaide Motorsport Festival where one of his most famous cars will be driven by two generations of the famous racing family.

Sir Jack Brabham’s 1966 Formula 1 world championship winning BT19 will be steered on the Victoria Park streets with son David Brabham and grandson Sam Brabham behind the wheel.

The BT19 was driven by Sir Jack Brabham in nine Grands Prix across the 1966 and 1967 seasons and had a good strike rate, scoring five podiums.

The partnership came to the fore when the Australian powered his way to four straight wins at France, Great Britain, Netherlands and Germany.

The four-peat helped cement the title success as Sir Jack Brabham became the last and likely only driver to win the title in a car he built.

Denny Hulme also steered the machine in his successful 1967 season, but his one drive in the BT19 did not go to pain, retiring at Spa.

Brabham scored one last podium in the BT19 at Zandvoort in the 1967 season.

Not only will the BT19 be on show, but other Brabham Formula 1 cars such as the 1989 BT58m which was the last Brabham to appear on the Formula 1 podium thanks to Stefano Modena’s Monaco third place.

The last-ever Brabham Formula 1 car, the BT60B, driven by 1996 world champion Damon Hill in 1992.

Sir Jack Brabham’s son David Brabham, who will be driving in Adelaide, also has Formula 1 pedigree.

David Brabham racked up 30 Grand Prix starts between the 1990 San Marino Grand Prix and 1994 Australian Grand Prix at Brabham and Simtek.

He achieved more success in touring cars and sports cars, winning the Super Tourers Bathurst 1000 of 1997 in a BMW 320i with Geoff Brabham, while he also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans aboard a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with other former F1 drivers Marc Gené and Alexander Wurz.

Sam Brabham in the BT19 which will be on track in Adelaide.

Sam Brabham has continued the family’s rich motor racing legacy having raced in the Formula Ford, Porsche Carrera Cup and the Australian GT Championship in recent years.

The third generation racer cannot wait to drive his grandfather’s famous machine on the Adelaide streets.

“It’s going to be fantastic to not only have the BT19 on track, but to have my father (David) coming to drive it with me at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival is going to be really special,” said Sam Brabham.

“It’s fantastic to have the Adelaide Motorsport Festival back; we’ve missed it the last couple of years and now it’s back bigger than ever, to have such an amazing array of beautiful cars with such incredible history not just for Australia but all around the world is fantastic.

“This is actually my first time at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival but I’m really excited and heard amazing things about the event, obviously I raced last year at the Adelaide 500, so I can see what the city brings with motorsport and it’s such a fantastic atmosphere, I’m really looking forward to it.”

The BT19 will be hitting the track on Saturday, March 25.
